Our coalition mayors continue to focus on improving public safety and new initiatives to address the fentanyl crisis. On Wednesday, Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin announced a new task force focusing on the city’s urgent drug crisis, including fentanyl, m**h and other deadly illegal substances, and its impacts on community safety. The City of Marysville WA - government has adopted a new ordinance requiring mandatory 30-day minimum sentences for repeated "public disorder crimes" like public drug use and theft. The hope is that the sentencing will help more people get into medically assisted treatment and drug rehabilitation programs, according to Mayor Jon Nehring.

A minimum of 30 days in jail must be given to defendants convicted of three “public disorder” crimes in five years.

Quinones will share more of his thoughts this Thursday, Sept. 28 at a free community event at Cavelero Mid HS in Lake Stevens. Author Sam Quinones will visit Snohomish County on Sept. 28 to deliver remarks based on his research for two award-winning book, "The Least of Us,” the story of the nation’s opioid epidemic. Quinones broke the story of Mexican traffickers’ m**hod of making m**hamphetamine in catastrophic supplies “now accompanied by waves of psychosis resembling schizophrenia, mental illness, homelessness and tent encampments across America,” according to his website.

Snohomish County Government Executive Dave Somers released a list of seven goals to reduce drug use in the county, including working with school superintendents on prevention education, training county staff to administer naloxone and investigating the feasibility of a mobile opioid treatment program, according to the Everett Herald.
