At a ceremony yesterday, Gambian nurse anesthetist Dr. Alieu Jawara was honored with the Distinguished Service Award at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Dr. Jawara received the award in recognition of his contributions to ROOTS Health Gambia, a non-profit organization focused on improving healthcare services in The Gambia.
Based in Everett, Washington, ROOTS Health Services was founded by U.S.-trained Gambian anesthesia providers to enhance perioperative care in their home country.
Over the years, the organization has successfully collected and shipped millions of Dalasis worth of anesthesia equipment and other medical supplies to The Gambia, addressing critical shortages in the nation's healthcare system.
