Hunger is a problem in every part of the United States, but rural counties face particular challenges:

🍎 People in rural areas often live far away from grocery stores and food pantries, which can make getting food difficult, especially without a car or public transportation.
🍎 Fewer jobs are available in rural areas, and those that are often pay low wages or don’t offer full-time hours. Affording groceries can be hard, even while working multiple jobs.

Rural areas comprise less than two-thirds of all U.S. counties, but 9 out of 10 counties with the highest food insecurity rates are rural. Programs like Mobile Food Distributions help meet the needs of our neighbors in rural areas by providing access to nutritious groceries in their own communities. To learn more about this program, and how you can host or sponsor one in your community, visit our website: https://tristatefoodbank.org/find-help/mobile-food-distribution-schedule

Our volunteers are still sorting donations from Stamp Out Hunger last month! The tri-state really showed up for our neighbors, and Evansville residents alone gave nearly 23,000 pounds of food!

Thank you to these students from Signature School who took a day out of their summer break to help us organize and box donations. We couldn't do it without our amazing volunteers!

Everyone deserves to eat healthy meals, but seniors often face unique challenges that make getting necessary groceries harder:

🍎 Seniors are more likely to have chronic health conditions that make cooking and grocery shopping difficult.
🍎 Many seniors don’t have access to transportation, making it more difficult to get to grocery stores or food pantries.
🍎 Seniors often have a fixed income, making it difficult to afford groceries as prices get higher.

Tri-State Food Bank works with partner agencies and programs to ensure that our population of older adults has access to nutritious food. One example of how we do this is through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). This government-funded program, through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), provides pantry-stable groceries for seniors affected by hunger.

Tri-State Food Bank volunteers assemble boxes each month that contain healthy grains, vegetables, fruits, protein and dairy items. The boxes are delivered to our participating partner agencies who then distribute them to qualifying seniors registered with the program.

Our partnership with Feeding America connects us with farmers, manufacturers, retailers, and government agencies to get food to where it's needed most. We're proud to be a part of this organization and look forward to continue serving our neighbors alongside Denis and the Feeding America team!
