Mended Hearts Central Region

Mended Hearts Central Region The Central Region made up of MH Chapters and MLH Groups from Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania. ♥

Founded by Dr. Dwight E. Harken, The Mended Hearts was started with three of Dr. Harken’s open heart surgery patients. In January 1951 Dr. Harken asked Doris Silliman, one of the first 50 patients to ever have heart surgery, and three other post-surgery heart patients – Keith Otto, Alford Santimassino and Elizabeth Wilkinson – to meet at the hospital. They spoke of their new feeling of well-being,

their plans and hopes for the future — and with renewed happiness they spoke of their “mended hearts.” They realized how wonderful it would be to provide support and help others facing the same experience. With the assistance of Dr. Harken they formed an organization, wrote up a charter and planned their membership contacts with the aid of the hospital workers. They called themselves the Mended Hearts. They often spoke of how great it was to be alive and to help others.

This Tuesday, April 12 at 6 PM CT, the Chicago chapter of The Mended Hearts, Inc. will host a conversation with Chaplain Edward Penate on the topic of “End of Life Planning for Patients and Caregivers.”
Chaplain Penate for many years has served at Northwestern Memorial Hospital to give pastoral counseling to patients facing severe illness to address their emotional needs as well as other counseling on how to handle their illness. Since all of us from time to time are confronted with a friend or relative who is facing a situation which may have life threatening consequences, we should be prepared to interact with them as they face their emotional needs. While advice on estate planning may be one topic, the intent of this presentation is more directed toward assisting the person dealing with his or her illness in a positive manner.
All are welcome. No registration is necessary. Meetings are held over Zoom. If interested contact Neal J. Block, president of the Chicago Mended Hearts chapter, at [email protected].
