Follow us for updates, events, photos, and ways we serve our members and local community. Freemasonry came to Indiana by way of the South Gate, that is, through Kentucky, from Virginia. The first Lodge in this state was organized at Vincennes in 1809. The first in Evansville received its charter in 1819 and was called the Olive Branch Lodge #10. In 1848 this became Evansville Lodge #64. Reed Lodge

was an offshoot of Evansville Lodge. In 1865, right after the Civil War, application was made to the Grand Lodge of Indiana to form a new Lodge by the following brethren:

J. Carlin, J. Gatch, John B. Hudspeth, C. Crabtree, Azro Dyer, D. C. Keller, Samuel Reed, R. Cooke, J. Wheeler, J. M. Shackelford, W. J. Hargrave, C. Wentz, Benjamen F. Gatch, L. Baird

Dispensation was granted by Most Worshipful Grand Master H. G. Hazelrigg, under date of October 16, 1865, and officers were named as follows: Samuel Reed, Worshipful Master, W. Hargrave, Senior Warden, R. Cooke, Junior Warden. The name and title of the Lodge to be was Reed Lodge U. D. (Under Dispensation)

The first meeting was held October 22, 1865, with the above named officers in their respective stations. John C. Wheeler was the first secretary and L. Baird was the first treasurer. The last meeting of Reed Lodge U. was held May 14, 1866. On May 30, 1866, The Grand Lodge of Indiana granted a charter, executed by H. Hazelrigg, Most Worshipful Grand Master, to the members of Reed Lodge U. styling and naming the same, Reed Lodge #316, F. & A. On June 11, 1866, Brother William E. Hollingsworth, by authority from the M. Grand Master constituted Reed Lodge #316 a regularly organized Lodge, with full power to work as such under the Charter granted by the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge, and at the same time installed the officers of the Lodge, placing Brother Samuel Reed in the East. A total of ninety-three members and visitors were present at this meeting. The first official act as a Lodge to a brother Lodge was to send a letter of thanks to Evansville Lodge #64 for their contribution to the formation of the new Lodge. The first By-Laws were adopted May 14, 1866, and were patterned, as far as possible, after those of Evansville Lodge. Brother Reed, for whom the Lodge was named, occupied the Master's chair while the Lodge was working under U. and continued in this office until June 25, 1866, when W. Hargrave was installed as Worshipful Master. He had been elected June 11 of that year. Thus the Lodge started (Under Dispensation) in October, 1865, with a membership of fourteen. The first annual report to Grand Lodge showed $25 collected in dues, $16 paid in bills, and $7 in Grand Lodge dues. By 1868 the membership had grown to forty-nine and by the end of 1876 (a little better than ten years) the membership was ninety-six. Dues were fifty cents per month, payable monthly. The initiation fee for all three degrees was $25. Meetings were held on the second and fourth Mondays. the first brother to complete his degrees in the new Lodge was F. Erhman. Samuel Reed was also the pastor of the Locust Street Methodist Church (which was renamed the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church in 1866 when it moved to its current location at 3rd and Chestnut) from 1843 until 1844. Brother Reed died in 1869 and was buried with Masonic honors in Oak Hill Cemetery. A memorial to him, done in marble, was later provided and photographs of it were sent to his daughter and to Newburgh Lodge. This memorial has been kept in a closet near the Blue Room. In 1875 a committee was appointed to assist the family in designing a suitable tombstone.

What a great night at the Downtown Masonic Temple in Evansville.

Tonight, Sword of Bunker Hill: Pocket City Order No. 82 gathered for a Meeting and Degree, bringing Brothers together in a spirit of fellowship, patriotism, and remembrance.

With 2026 marking America’s 250th year of independence, the timing made the evening feel even more meaningful. There was good fellowship, strong participation, and a reminder that the best Masonic nights are still the ones spent together.

Thank you to every Brother who came out, traveled in, took part, and helped make tonight happen.

Saturday was a special one for Reed Lodge.

On May 30, 2026, we traveled from Evansville to Madison, Indiana, to hold an Entered Apprentice Degree at the historic Masonic Heritage Foundation, Inc DBA: Schofield House

That house means something to Indiana Masonry. On January 13, 1818, fourteen Masons met in an upstairs room there and formed the Grand Lodge of Indiana. More than 200 years later, we were able to gather in that same historic place and help one new Brother take his first step in Freemasonry.

It is hard not to feel the weight of that.
For us, the evening was about walking in the footsteps of those who came before us. Not in some abstract way, but literally — standing in a place where Indiana Freemasonry took root, remembering the men who built before us, and doing our small part to carry it forward.

We were glad to have visiting Brethren with us from Newburgh Lodge and Union Lodge, and we owe a sincere thank-you to Brother Bill Lane for his hospitality, care, and stewardship of the Schofield House.

And yes, before the degree, we started the evening with ice cream. Which, honestly, felt about right.

A historic house, a new Brother, a few visiting friends, and a reminder that what we do today becomes part of the story someone else will look back on later.

On Saturday, May 9, Reed Lodge No. 316, F. & A. M. gathered with gratitude, humility, and pride for the 160th Rededication of our Lodge.

For 160 years, Reed Lodge has stood as a place where men have come together in the spirit of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. From our beginning in 1866 to this moment in 2026, generations of Brothers have carried this Lodge forward — not for themselves alone, but for their families, their community, and those who would come after them.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Grand Lodge Officers of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Indiana, especially Most Worshipful Grand Master Randolph L. Seipel, for joining us and helping make this rededication a meaningful and memorable occasion. We are also grateful to Worshipful Master Andrew Heilman for his leadership, his participation in the ceremony, and his steady care in helping guide Reed Lodge through this important year.

It was an honor to welcome so many visiting Brothers, Past Masters, families, friends, and guests from near and far. We were especially thankful to share the day with our Brothers from Prince Hall Lodge No. 5, whose presence added to the spirit of fellowship and unity that marked the occasion.

The day was filled with moments we will remember: thoughtful words, reverent prayers, beautiful music provided by a Grand Lodge organist, a look back at rededication photos from 60 years ago, a wonderful meal, a commemorative cake, and the simple joy of Brothers and families gathered together in friendship. We were also honored as Grand Lodge recognized veterans in attendance with a special pin in appreciation of their service.

We were also grateful to learn more about First Lady Mel Seipel’s Companion Pet Project, which helps provide Joy For All Companion Pets for Compass Park Memory Care residents — a thoughtful effort to bring comfort, companionship, and joy to those residents.

An event like this does not happen because of one person. It happens because many hands quietly do the work. To those who planned, cooked, served, cleaned, decorated, prepared the room, arranged the program, played music, captured photos, brought history to life, welcomed visitors, moved chairs, stayed late, and handled the countless details most people never see — thank you.

Some service is visible. Much of it is not. But all of it matters.

As Reed Lodge looks back across 160 years, we also look forward. Our Lodge stands today because those before us cared enough to preserve it. It will stand tomorrow because we choose to carry that same light forward with dignity, charity, fellowship, and purpose.

To every Brother, family member, guest, visitor, and friend who shared in this rededication: thank you for being part of Reed Lodge history.

Happy Mother’s Day from Reed Lodge #316 F. & A. M.

Today, we pause to honor all mothers connected to our Lodge: the mothers, wives, widows, grandmothers, daughters, and women whose love, patience, and quiet strength help shape the men we are called to be.

Much of the work of Freemasonry is seen in meetings, degrees, dinners, service projects, late nights, phone calls, and time spent away from home. But behind that work, there is often someone offering understanding, encouragement, and grace. Someone who keeps the home steady, supports the mission, and allows our Brothers to give their time in service to the Lodge, the Fraternity, and the community.

For every evening you have waited, every schedule you have adjusted, every meal you have helped prepare, every event you have supported, and every moment you have given so that our Brothers could serve, we thank you.

The strength of a Lodge is not built by its members alone. It is also built by the families who stand beside them, and by the mothers whose love teaches the very virtues we strive to practice: patience, kindness, charity, faithfulness, and devotion.

From all of us at Reed Lodge No. 316, Happy Mother’s Day. May you know today how deeply you are appreciated, honored, and loved.

Tonight, our Lodge pauses in gratitude.

We honor Worshipful Brother Morgan Schum, who was presented a Certificate of Appreciation from Lessing Lodge #464 F.&A.M. in recognition of his selfless labor, steady hands, and faithful heart. When our building bore the scars of last year’s flood, he did not look away. He showed up. He worked. He gave of himself so that what was damaged could be restored, and what was burdened could stand strong again. That kind of service leaves its mark not only on walls and floors, but on the hearts of Brothers.

We also proudly celebrate Past Master Joshua DeYoung, who received his Past Master’s jewel from our current Worshipful Master, Andrew Heilman. It is a fitting tribute to service faithfully rendered and leadership that continues to bless our Lodge.

These moments remind us that the strength of our Lodge is found in men who serve without seeking praise, lead without seeking glory, and quietly leave things better than they found them.

We are grateful for both of these Brothers, and we are proud to call them our own.
