Thank you Emma Lasher ’24, for supporting student learning and development!

Thank you to Emma Lasher ’24, marketing, for visiting Ms. Aleisha Jones’ MKTG 201 class and sharing her career advice with our students.

Throughout the presentation, she reassured students: “You don’t have to have your career all figured out right now." As the Digital Marketing Manager at Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc., Emma talked about how she worked her way up from an internship to her current role.

Her advice for students wanting to enter the marketing field and looking for an internship? "Set yourself apart by showing your value to an employer. If you don't have on-the-job experience yet, create it wherever you can, even if it's through volunteer work or class projects. Once you've landed an internship or that first job, they won't expect you to know everything. But they will expect you to figure things out. Show initiative. Take time to understand the company you’re working for. Your first job out of college may not be your dream job, but learn from it and understand the ‘why.’”

We appreciate our University of Southern Indiana Alumni returning to campus to give back to current USI students.

Thank you alumnus Sean Ferguson '91 for returning to campus and sharing your expertise with students!

Shout out to University of Southern Indiana Alumni Sean Ferguson '91 communications, for joining Ms. Aleisha Jones' Marketing 201 class as a guest speaker.

Sean kept students laughing throughout his visit while sharing lessons from his career in marketing. He shared how his experience in the nonprofit sector helped him develop skills in fundraising and sales. In his current role as the Marketing Manager for Eastland Mall, it's not just about ad campaigns for products. It's about building relationships with vendors and tenants, understanding audiences, and adapting to change.

For students interested in a career in marketing, Sean advises developing strong skills in communication, data analytics, content creation, and being strategic. "Marketing in business is everything, whether you're creating ads or trying to attract talent. If you go into marketing, you have to be comfortable with change."
