As we advocate for a more inclusive society this World Down Syndrome Day, we must be careful with the words we use to describe disability. Language is often the first step toward either connection or isolation.

People with Down syndrome may have an intellectual and developmental disability. This means they may need extra help to learn skills like talking, reading, or writing.

However, words like "mentally handicapped," "backward," or "re****ed" are outdated and offensive.

These labels are harmful because they:
❌Create Barriers: They focus on what a person cannot do, rather than their unique gifts and talents.
❌ Lead to Loneliness: Harmful labels fuel the stigma and discrimination that leave people "socially absent" even when they are physically present.
❌ Undermine Rights: Everyone has the right to be treated as an equal member of society.

True connection grows when we see people for who they are—individuals with their own identities and interests.

Let’s stand by using language that respects the dignity of every person.

Thank you so much to the wonderful folks at Best Home Furnishings for showing up in their fun socks to show their support for our Down syndrome community! During October, , they raised $4,500 to donate to our organization! We'll be putting every penny to good use to help keep our programs running, to help cover expenses not covered by insurance for individuals with Down syndrome, and to help fund the annual events we host to raise awareness and show support for our Down syndrome community! Your support means the world to us and to the families and individuals we serve! Thank you!
