Saturday April 25th the Thomas Sprigg Sr., Chapter was privileged to be involved in honoring Civil War Veterans at the Babytown Cemetery Relocation
In early 2026 our chapter partnered with Mater Dei High School when the school announced plans to relocate the historic Babytown Cemetery, where Civil War Veterans and other 19th C graves laid on school grounds.
The relocation was necessary to expand the school campus.
Chapter President Katie Bockting, Historian Alisha Aman , and Recording Secretary Cheri Baumberger assisted school alumni in helping research and identify 20 names interred at the Cemetery along with planning and conducting the reinterment ceremony held on April 25th 2026.
With the help of dedicated volunteers, the meticulous excavation revealed remains and artifacts that were respectfully moved to St. Joseph Cemetery, where they were laid to rest during a dignified ceremony.
The service included a brief history of Babytown and heartfelt tributes to those buried there, dating back to 1862. Special recognition was given to the four Civil War veterans by honoring their service and sacrifice. The ceremony served as a remembrance for their lives and community contributions.
Today, these souls rest in a single grave near the base of the statue of St. Joseph close to the entrance of the cemetery along with more than 38,000 others across the serene 100-acre grounds. Wreaths were placed at the casket from several lineage societies including Indiana State CD XVII C and the Thomas Sprigg Sr., Chapter.
Four members of the Marsch family; descendants of Civil War Veteran Mason O. Newman, Sgt, Co F 60th IN Volunteer Infantry took part in the ceremony. They unveiled a new grave marker engraved with the names of all those reinterred, the family placed flowers and were presented with a folded American flag that was draped across the casket in a solemn tribute to their ancestor, there was a 21 gun salute and Taps was played by a Mater Dei student.
