The brutal torture was intended do humiliate Jesus, and please the angry crowd; it really fulfilled Isaiah 53.

John 19:1-3
So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.

And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe.

Then they said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck Him with their hands.

Jesus bound and delivered to Pilate: Accused of claiming to be, "King of the Jews."

Mark 15:12-15
Pilate answered and said to them again, "What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?"

So they cried out again, "Crucify Him!"

Then Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they cried out all the more, "Crucify Him!"

So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.

He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, and we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.
