The Origin Story of SWIYP

The origin story Southwest Indiana Yoga Project, or SWIYP, is one of action inspired by observation.

SWIYP first took shape as an anthropological observation. Having practiced in numerous studios around the Tri-state area for several years, our founder observed the lack of diversity in yoga classes. Absent were people of color, male practitioners, and diverse body types. These observations brought to bear issues of class, race, and access. And so, Southwest Indiana Yoga Project emerged with the intention to connect formerly excluded communities to the powerful life tool of yoga. If the practice of yoga allows for personal growth and change, what could be its social possibilities, particularly regarding community building and transformation?

Our mission is to empower individuals and communities to live healthy, integrated lives through the practice of yoga.

Our yoga journey teaches us to honor our bodies, and by extension, the world around us. Practitioners learn 1). to build awareness of their physical bodies, 2). to acknowledge their strengths as well as weakness, and 3). breath work. These lessons apply on and off the mat. As such, yoga practice is an important component of our nonprofit’s mission. Yoga practice, however, is only a first step.
