📚 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY 📚

September 26, 1925: An Evansville native made WORLD history.

On this day 101 years ago, Dr. Elbert Frank Cox received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Cornell University, becoming the first Black person in the world to earn a doctorate in mathematics. 🎓🖤

Born in Evansville in 1895, Cox graduated from Indiana University in 1917 before continuing his education at Cornell. His doctoral dissertation was titled “Polynomial Solutions of Difference Equations.”

But Dr. Cox’s achievement was about far more than a degree.

He broke through barriers in a field where Black scholars faced enormous obstacles, then spent decades teaching and mentoring the students who came after him. After earning his doctorate, he joined the faculty at West Virginia State College. In 1929, he moved to Howard University, where he eventually chaired the combined Mathematics and Physics Department from 1957 to 1961.

And his legacy didn't stop when he left the classroom.

Dr. Cox became the first African American inducted into the American Mathematical Society, and his groundbreaking achievement helped open doors for generations of Black mathematicians who followed. 🖤
