Why we launched the Community Table Fund🍽️

Behind every delivery at Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois is a commitment to dignity. But as food and packaging costs rise, keeping that promise requires new solutions.

Right now, 85% of our clients rely on subsidized, reduced-fee meals to get by. To ensure our doors stay open to everyone, without ever starting a waitlist, we have to bridge a $15,000 monthly funding gap.

That is exactly why the Community Table Fund exists, to protect access for the neighbors who are stretching every dollar the furthest:

🎖️ Local veterans living on fixed pensions.
👵 Retirees managing rising cost-of-living expenses.
đź’Ľ Neighbors facing sudden financial or health hardships.

When you join as a monthly supporter, you aren't just donating, you are providing predictable, reliable food security that allows us to plan ahead with absolute confidence.

Let's make sure no one in our community is ever turned away from a meal.

Happy Juneteenth! ❤️💛💚 Today is all about celebrating freedom, resilience, and the incredible power of community.

While we’re out delivering hot meals to our wonderful seniors today, we’re also celebrating the rich history, vibrant culture, and shared journey of our neighbors across Northeastern Illinois.

While many of us are making summer plans, heading to patios, and enjoying the vibrant Chicagoland energy out and about, many of our older neighbors are facing a very different reality. For them, rising temperatures mean being stuck indoors, isolated from the community.

Our mission this summer goes far beyond delivering a meal. For homebound neighbors, our volunteers and drivers provide a vital lifeline to the outside world. Often, that quick chat at the door and a friendly wellness check is the only social interaction they will have all day.

But we can't do it alone. Your support ensures that we can keep our delivery routes running all summer long, bringing both nutrition and meaningful human connection to those who need it most.

Together, we can beat the heat and keep our community connected.

A delivered meal can mean nutrition, a friendly face, and a moment of relief as temperatures begin to rise.

In June, we celebrate Pet Appreciation Week!

As we celebrate, we are reminded of the incredible bond between people and their pets, and the importance of consuming nutritious meals for ourselves and our furry friends.

We are deeply grateful for our partnership with Evanston Animal Shelter, whose generous donations of dog and cat food help make a meaningful difference in the lives of our clients. These donations allow us to support both our clients and their beloved companions, helping them remain safely in their homes during challenging times.

Beyond meeting a basic need, this partnership helps ensure that our clients can continue caring for the pets who bring them comfort, companionship and unconditional love.

Pictured here is our client, Alyssa Wolf, her chihuahua, Princess. This is just one of many client-pet families who benefit from this amazing partnership.

Thank you, Evanston Animal Shelter, for helping us strengthen the human-animal bond and support the well-being of our community.

Introducing the Community Table Fund 🍽️

A new initiative designed to ensure that every community member can access meals regardless of financial circumstances, even as food and packaging costs continue to rise.

85% of our clients qualify for reduced-fee meals based on income and need. This care creates a gap of roughly $15,000 each month in subsidized meal costs. The Community Table Fund directly bridges this gap ensuring local veterans, retirees on fixed incomes, and neighbors facing sudden hardships never face a waitlist.

Even a small monthly contribution makes a meaningful difference and helps us plan ahead with confidence. Together, we can make sure that no one in our community is ever turned away from a meal they need.

Rising costs of living combined with cuts to SNAP benefits are creating renewed concerns about food insecurity, especially for households already struggling to make ends meet. For older adults living on fixed incomes, these pressures can be devastating.

This recent report is an important reminder of growing challenges facing vulnerable communities across the country. As these challenges grow, so does the need for community support.

If you’d like to help ensure local seniors continue receiving nutritious meals, please consider making a gift today at https://mealsonwheelsnei.org/donate

The rising threat of food insecurity is partly why Americans feel worse off than ever before, according to research by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
