Over The Rainbow Association

Over The Rainbow Association OTR HISTORY:

Over the Rainbow Association began with the dreams and tireless work of a few parents of adult children who had severe physical disabilities.

OTR is dedicated to increasing the quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities through the creation of affordable, accessible, barrier-free housing solutions and person-centered services that encourage independent living. These parents, who were not wealthy, were faced with the dilemma of where their children would live as they reached adulthood and could no longer live at home with

their aging parents. After visiting the only existing options -- state-funded nursing homes and other assisted-living facilities, these parents were heartbroken. Residents could not come and go as they pleased. They could not choose when to get up, what to eat, and could not choose their own personal care attendants. Also, work or further education in these settings seemed impossible. After years of fundraising, research, and determination to develop a better housing solution, Over the Rainbow Association was born. OTR pioneered a new housing concept with the completion of an affordable, barrier-free, eight-unit apartment building in the trendy Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago in 1982. The Belden Apartments was the first of its kind in Chicago, and received the 1982 Governor's Award for Excellence in Housing for the Disabled and the American Architect’s Award for Disability Design. Today, OTR owns, manages, and provides person-centered services to 12 apartment communities and 5 more in progress serving over 350 adults across Northern Illinois.

Keith’s life changed forever when he was just 19 years old.
After a devastating accident, he lost the use of his right side and now uses a wheelchair.
At the time, he faced an uncertain future.
In this video, Keith shares how he found independence at Over The Rainbow.
Today, small supports can make a big difference in daily independence, including something as simple as opening the door to his home.

Hear Keith’s story.

MOPD and the Chicago Department of Public Health teamed up to gather information about people with disabilities in Chicago. We are releasing our report, and will share more about what we learned in an upcoming webinar on Tuesday, February 10 at 1PM. The report is titled “Neighborhood Conditions for Adults with Disabilities in Chicago.”

The report will be published on Monday, February 9 on our website: https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/mopd/supp_info/mopd-annual-reports.html

At the webinar, Tessa Day (CDPH Epidemiologist) and Clarissa Stanhope (Parkland College Director of Accessibility Services) will discuss the report and answer questions. Commissioners Rachel Arfa and Dr. Olusimbo Ige will introduce the conversation. https://forms.office.com/g/zSd7fRpRxZ

This is what kindness sounds like. 💙

This is what the is all about: spreading awareness, inclusion, and love for adults with physical disabilities, and helping our residents feel seen, supported, and celebrated.

This December, we’re spreading awareness through our initiative.
Your support goes directly to our residents, and together, we share that kindness in meaningful ways throughout our community. https://www.otrhousing.org/kindnesstag

Watch. Share. Tag someone who believes everyone deserves a place to belong.

During our OTR Challenge Tour in September, kids who joined us and GLASA - Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association showed up with open hearts and loud support for our residents, and it meant everything.

This , help us show up for our residents in a meaningful way. Here are just a few of the ways your gift can make an impact:

$6,400: Opens a door. Literally. Funds one automatic door opener so residents can enter and exit independently.

$200: Covers two weeks of healthy groceries as SNAP benefits continue to decline.

$150: Covers a community outing for one resident, such as a museum visit, concert, or sports event, including food and accessible transportation.

$100: Provides a warm, high-quality winter coat for one resident.

Your gift isn’t just a donation. It’s dignity. It’s a community. It’s a possibility. https://www.otrhousing.org/kindnesstag

Everyone who meets Mike loves him; his smile and laugh are contagious. Mike used to play in the NBA, and his love for basketball never left.

An accident took away the use of his legs in an instant, but it didn’t take his passion or his spirit. With the help of DANIEL IVANKOVICH MD, Mike regained his strength and the ability to live independently to get to Over The Rainbow.

Getting him to games brings joy and a sense of normalcy back into his life. With your donations, we can continue giving him experiences like these.

$150 gives one resident experiences like attending a game with accessible transportation.

Today, on , we invite you to read his story on our blog and consider helping more residents like Mike find a place they can truly call home.
