Evanston Present and Future

Thank you to our Opal Supporters Youth & Opportunity United for your sponsorship!

Opal’s Walk For Freedom, is an Emmy award-winning live-streaming TV special and community event that has garnered national and global recognition.

Opals Walk for Freedom is a TV broadcast production that commemorates significant historical events. In 2026, the event will honor both the 161st anniversary of Juneteenth and America’s 250th birthday, both in person and virtually.

As Illinois' host city, Evanston will represent the entire state. Participants will walk 2.5 miles along our beautiful lakefront to symbolize the two-and-a-half years between the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and the moment freedom was finally enforced in Texas on June 19th, 1865. The walk is a powerful reminder that freedom in America has often arrived unevenly — and that justice requires collective action to move it forward.

Today is Ms. Cheyenne's final day with Y.O.U. After spending years supporting, encouraging, and building relationships with our young people, she wanted to share a message with the community that has meant so much to her.

"When I think of Y.O.U. I think of home. All my life, all I wanted to do was to come back to my Evanston community and make a difference, Y.O.U. helped me and let me do that. The relationships and community I have built over the last 4 years are everlasting, and these memories will stay forever.

From my first day to my last, the families, the staff, the donors/board members, the schools, and most importantly, our youth have shown me nothing but love and support, and I hope you felt the same from me.

Y.O.U. will always be home, and I have never been good at goodbyes, and I do not want this to be a goodbye because I believe that when you've found a home, no matter where you go, you can always find it and come back to it.

Today is my last day at Y.O.U., and I just want to thank all of you for everything.

To ALL of my youth, continue to be curious, brave, kind, continue to be compassionate, continue to be leaders, embrace change, and most importantly... HAVE FUN! When things change, you grow, and when there is growth, there is success.

With love,

Ms. Cheyenne 💜"

Thank you, Ms. Cheyenne, for the care, energy, and dedication you've brought to Y.O.U. We wish you all the best in your next chapter.
