Evanston Car Cruise

Evanston Car Cruise Fun event staged the first weekend in August annually, which benefits local K-12 children with winter coats and shoes.

The History of the Evanston Car Cruise

The summer of 1988 found four hot rod “junkies” talking about starting a local car club where guys with the same interests could get together and work on their street rods, share ideas and skills, go cruising and to car shows and just hang out. In July of 1988 they started Small Town Toys with five charter members -- Ray Landry, Cole Deister, Steve Folliet,

Russ Easton and Rick Ludwing, along with their wives. New members were nominated by the charter members, then voted on by the group, after a month’s “get to know you” period. There was a small membership fee and club jackets for members designed by Rick Ludwing. Cars had to be 20 years or older to qualify. This was set up as a family-oriented club. During the colder months, the guys worked on their cars and helped each other in their shops. As a club we also got together for holiday parties -- Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc. During one of our winter meetings, Gordon Marrs was a guest and he was interested in a fund raiser for the Special Olympics kids in Evanston. He purposed a Car Show to be put on by our club for street rodders in this area to raise funds for this project. So began the Annual Evanston Charity Car Show in the summer of 1989. In the mid 1990’s Gary Harvey was working at a local car dealership in Evanston and admired the cars and members of our “local” car club, "Small Town Toys" and especially the car show that they held annually at Hamblin Park in August each summer. As a dealership sales manager and an amateur promoter, Gary approached the members of Small Town Toys to hold a “mini” car show, with food and awards at the dealership each spring. The event was a total success for both parties each year, and enjoyed by all in the community. Unfortunately, an internal problem developed within the car club and Small Town Toys was no more. As a non-club member, Gary felt that it was a shame for good friendships and people to melt away. With some help from founding Small Town Toys member and good friend Russ Easton, a few changes were made and with a simple new edict addressing a past issue and charity for glue, they both felt that new life could easily be breathed into the club again. Fortunately, most members just jumped right in, and the re-born car club's first new season held two car shows. DJ-ing the shows for several years was done by David B Smith from Evanston's local radio station KEVA. Later Donna Simpson was able to help the car club obtain the services of JC Hackett and his rock n roll racket, and JC is still spinning the wax and emceeing the car show today. A very important tool, a 5O1 (C)3 IRS classification was undertaken by club member Sheila Hockett. This was accomplished, and with support from Jim Davis of the Urban Renewal committee. a meeting place for the club was also arranged. Dennis Poppinga from the Evanston Parks and Rec. helped secure an annual date at Hamblin Park to hold our car show, the annual "Show 'N' Shine." Many local business owners sponsor and support the car show and club in many ways. 2016 will be the 21st annual Evanston Car Cruise car show. and as always, it will be held on the first Saturday in August in Hamblin Park. All of the car club members are volunteers and their only pay is in the satisfaction of providing a much needed charity in their home town for the needy local school kids here in Evanston. Came across some older files while attempting to organize and consolidate external hard drives. Soon realized these images were from a friend of the Evanston Car Cruise and a guy who really enjoyed the annual Show 'N' Shine, the late Steve Kodad. So, an impromptu video slide show was the result... Thanks, Steve! You are missed...

A fresh video coming soon. Simply wishing to place a quick throw-together video in the header or banner space in lieu of the picture that has been there for far too long. The 26th annual Evanston Car Cruise Show 'N' Shine is set for Saturday, August 7, 2021, in Evanston's Hamblin Park. Hope to see you there!

From Evanston Car Cruise vice-president Kerry McIntyre, dated this past February... A Letter to Mountain West News:

February, 2021

Hello to all you classic car nuts out there. Winter is back and it appears to be a mild winter (what ever that is). Yes, its still cold up here but there is only two inches of snow on the ground. It’s that time to thank our contributors to the annual winter shoes and coats charity. For the past twenty-five years, the Evanston Car Cruise car club volunteers have provided this charity to our Evanston and Mountain View school age kids in Uinta County.

With the help from our car show sponsors and participants, along with Wal-Mart, the car club has been able to provide winter shoes and coats at no charge for Evanston & Mountain View school kids in need, grades K through 12.

This past winter 2020/2021, the car club purchased over $1000.00 of winter shoes and coats, helping out 14 local kids. Since the start of this charity in 1996, the Evanston car club has spent over $82,000.00 dollars providing winter shoes and coats to local school-age kids; this Includes donations the club has generated for the Evanston SAFV, Evanston Shop-With-A-Cop and the Evanston YAHA Home, with proceeds from the indoor and outdoor car shows.

Last year, the car club had to cancel the annual indoor car show, and it looks like this year's (2021) indoor car show will also be canceled due to Covid-19 concerns. It's a shame that this issue is still with us and we all long for the days when the coronavirus is in our rear view mirror.

The car club has continued its charity programs that we expanded in 2016. We gave the local animal shelter $250.00 worth of supplies, the local shop with a cop program $250.00, along with a $250.00 donation to YAHA (the local shelter for kids in Uinta Co.).The 2020 out door car show benefited both the winter shoes and coats program, along with SAFV, and had a record turn out!

I really believe just about everyone with a classic car is itching to get out on the road to hit their favorite car shows. I know we had the only car show that first Saturday in August, and all went well for those that attended.

The club had to cancel its annual Christmas party for the first time ever, due to covid19 concerns. This is getting real old and we all hope for a resolution soon to this mess, but sometimes we are all just along for the ride.

As the Vice-President of the Evanston Car Cruise car club, I would like to send a special thank you to all the car club members, the other guys car club and car show participants for their efforts in making our car show a success! And to all the car nuts out there, don’t forget the indoor car show is canceled for 2021, but the 26th annual Evanston Car Cruise Show 'N' Shine car show is set for Saturday, August 7th, in shady Hamblin park in Evanston, Wyoming. Admission to enter your car is still only 20 dollars.

If you want a break this summer, from the 100 degree heat in the Salt Lake Valley, then come on up to our outdoor car show (the park is at 6,600 feet) and bring the family to check out all the cool cars! This year we will try to have our annual wet Tee-shirt contest (it was canceled last year due to coronavirus concerns) for the adults and kids — it’s quite an event!

Look for our flier in Mt. West Street News or go on line @ http://evanstoncarcruise.org for more info. As always, entertainment for the outdoor show is provided by J C Hackett and his rock n roll racket.

Hope to see you there!
