Here’s what dunking our boss looks like behind the scenes. Mary Aceron, a Family Support home visitor, gets him every year. Thanks for being a good sport, Stephen Vick!

One of the most wonderful aspects of our agency is its diversity of cultures, languages, and people. We sang happy birthday to a few employees today at our staff retreat and then repeated it in Hindi. So beautiful!

We enjoyed several days of learning at our in-service and at our annual participation in The Collective summit with other non-profits.

But today was all about laughing, dancing, eating, and repeatedly dunking our boss with cold water at our annual staff retreat. Sorry, Stephen Vick. Don’t hire so many people with rocket arms! 🤣

Some exciting news to share: our board member Jade Carpenter is running for Mayor of Evanston in the February 2027 special election.

Jade is an attorney, a mom raising her daughter here in Evanston, and someone many of us have worked alongside since she joined our board in September 2025. As a non-profit organization, IWSE is non-partisan. Jade is running in her individual capacity. As a board member, Jade has been active in event planning and has offered legal expertise.

Elliot Oats and Jeff Boarini also have announced they intend to run for the office.

According to Evanston Roundtable, if all three candidates (or more) qualify for the ballot, the special election will go to a primary on Feb. 23, rather than the general election on April 6. In a primary, a candidate could win the seat outright if they secure more than 50% of the vote; otherwise, the top two candidates would advance to a runoff in the general. Whoever wins will serve the last two years of Biss’ term until the next regular election in spring 2029, when all city offices will be up for full four-year terms.

Candidates will need to collect signatures from at least 946 registered Evanston voters to get on the ballot. They will file these signatures between Oct. 19 to 26, and could start collecting signatures as soon as July 28.

Our offices will be closed Friday, June 19th, in observance of Juneteenth, a federal holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans.

We join the community in celebrating Juneteenth and honoring the enduring legacy, culture, and contributions of Black Americans. We are grateful for the opportunity to help create a future where every child has the support and opportunities they need to thrive.
