(Dec 19 | 6:00 AM) FATS Trail Update!

A cold front moved through bringing just under an inch of rain to the FATS area. Given the dry conditions beforehand, the trails should begin to dry out within approximately 24 hours. Please allow adequate time for the trails to dry before using the trails to help prevent damage.

Thank you for helping take care of the trails!

Update from Riley Hale, WRDW!

From Augusta Utilities Department: "The Augusta Utilities Department announces the reopening of the Canal towpath between the Raw Water Pump Station and the I-20 Bridge for public use on Friday, December 19, 2025. Work continues with the federal dam safety regulators to address the final comments on embankment repair plans. Because of this ongoing coordination, the construction originally scheduled to begin in January will be delayed. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we work closely with federal dam safety regulators to finalize the embankment repair plans,” said Wes Byne, Director of Utilities. “Reopening this section of the Canal towpath allows residents to safely enjoy the trail while we continue moving this important infrastructure project forward.” In preparation, utilities crews have made safety improvements along the previously closed section of the trail to ensure it is ready for public use. Visitors are asked to observe all posted signs and remain behind marked safety barriers. Once repair work begins, portions of the towpath will be temporarily closed at various times. Advance notice will be shared with the public before any closures. We appreciate the community’s continued patience and support as we move this critical project forward."

Deep Step South Update!

The crew was back out today finishing up the work on the Toilet Tangle — and we’re happy to report: mission accomplished!

Fans of our iconic toilet will be relieved to know it survived the hurricane completely unscathed. Carlos, being the jokester he is, even gave it a hands-on “sturdiness check” just to be safe - check that out in the pics below! 😄

The team crushed it today, clearing 41 more trees and opening up another tenth of a mile of trail. That’s a LOT of hard work, and the results are fantastic!

Huge thanks to these trail warriors who hit it hard today:

• Carlos Galvis
• Josh Dexter
• Joe Pitta
• Bob Hoeppel
• Angela Allen

Deep Step South Update!

Many, many thanks to trail heroes Carlos Galvis and Josh Dexter for clearing 29 trees out of the Toilet Tangle on the Deep Step Trail today!!

This remaining section of the trail was hit hard by Hurricane Helene, but our sawyer teams are working hard to tackle the remaining trees — 340 trees still to go.

Huge appreciation for everyone putting in the time and effort to restore Deep Step! Carlos and Josh have put in many, many hours on the Deep Step Trail!!!

Tower Trail Work Party Update!

Some truly incredible work went down on Tower Trail yesterday! A powerhouse crew of 6 sawyers (with 3 pulling double shifts) and 9 support/safety volunteers hit the trail hard and cut and cleared an impressive 159 trees!

We were thrilled to have Stan Crane return from Northwest Georgia SORBA to lend his expertise. His help has been invaluable as we continue this large-scale Hurricane Helene recovery effort. He’s been coming in from the start and his dedication and commitment have been greatly appreciated!

To put this work into perspective: Tower Trail started with a staggering 1,822 trees down after the storm. Despite limited access and severe canopy loss, our sawyer teams have already managed to cut and clear 1,112 trees so far off this trail.

This is not routine trail maintenance. These large work parties are focused on reclaiming trails that remain closed due to the sheer number of downed trees and extensive tread damage caused primarily by uprooted trees. Root balls torn out of the ground have left major holes, heaved tread, and created unstable trail surfaces that require significant effort to restore.

Tower Trail has always been challenging because of its limited access points, and post-storm conditions have only amplified that challenge. Still, these crews continue to adapt, get creative, and push forward.

Huge thanks to these trail reclamation heroes:
• Stan Crane – double shift
• Jake Veriato – double shift
• Miles St. Peter – double shift
• Jack Crockett
• Greg Hylton
• Paul Farrow
• Pete Hill
• Charlton Hill
• Jackie Dubose
• George Murphy
• Jeff Lippe
• Gabe Hoffman
• Brogan Rose
• Greg Miller
• Carina Bilger
• Jackie Sanders
• Daniel Allen
• Angela Allen

We are incredibly grateful for every one of you!

We’ll continue hosting smaller Hurricane Helene recovery work parties through the end of the year. If you’d like to be added to our weekend or weekday warrior email notification list and receive updates about ongoing trail reclamation work, let us know via sorbacsra.org or email us at [email protected].

This work is about reopening trails — and it wouldn’t happen without volunteers like these. Never helped before? No problem we will quickly bring you up to speed!!

Big Rock Trail West — Update!

Fantastic news! A strong crew of dedicated volunteers, led by our very own Rootball King, Ed Farnell, wrapped up the final projects on the west side of Big Rock Trail this morning!

With one last inspection and a recommendation to the U.S. Forest Service, this side of the trail could be open before Christmas!

This milestone represents countless hours of hard work — cutting and clearing downed trees, repairing rootballs, and restoring damaged tread. It truly took a village, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed time and effort along the way.

Today’s Trail Heroes:
• Ed Farnell
• Todd Snider
• Mike Ikeler

Huge thanks to this team for a job exceptionally well done!

Stay tuned for the official announcement on the west side reopening — and just as importantly, keep an eye out for upcoming work party announcements on Big Rock, Tower, and Deep Step Trails.

We simply cannot do this work without the strength and support of our amazing trail community. Thank you all for showing up and making a real difference!

Deep Step South Update!

Great progress today cutting and clearing 66 trees on the south side of Deep Step Trail!

There’s still about ⅓ of the south section to go (approximately 0.7 miles) with over 350 trees left to cut/clear!

Many, many thanks to the Friday crew who did a great job in challenging conditions:

John Pilcher
Paul Farrow
Dave Knapp
Angela Allen

This section had plenty of blowdown, and a full summer of viney foliage growth which made the work especially demanding. The crew pushed through and got it done!

We still need 2 support/safety volunteers for both the morning and afternoon teams tomorrow, Saturday, December 13.

If you’re available, please reach out through our website sorbacsra.org or email [email protected].

Tower Trail – We Need You!

We’re so close to having a full team for this Saturday afternoon’s chainsaw work on Tower Trail — but we still need two more support/safety volunteers to make it happen.

If you can help, grab a friend and jump in! Your presence ensures our sawyers can work safely and efficiently, and it makes a real impact on reclaiming this trail.

Deep Step North Update!

The final major project on the north side of the Deep Step Trail is officially complete!

Huge thanks to our incredible rootball kings for making it happen:

Ed Farnell
Carlos Galvis
Joe Pitta
Josh Dexter

One final run-through to make sure every detail is buttoned up, then a recommendation to the USFS to open this segment of the Deep Step Trail. Stay tuned for updates!

Looking ahead: We still have work to do this Saturday, December 13th, cutting and clearing additional trees on the Tower Trail. We’re planning to run two shifts—but we need enough volunteers, specifically safety/support, to make it happen.

If you can help or have questions, please reach out through our website at sorbacsra.org or email us at [email protected].

Thank you all for your continued support!

Tower Trail at FATS Needs You – Saturday, December 13th

We have an amazing group of certified sawyers ready to clear more Hurricane Helene damage — now we just need support/safety volunteers to make our workday on Saturday, December 13th happen safely. We need help for both morning and afternoon shifts.

For every sawyer, we’re required to have at least one support/safety person assisting, and right now we’re rich in sawyers but short on support. We don’t want that to be the one thing that holds us back from completing this first major step toward reopening the north trails.

These roles are critical and require no saw experience — you’ll be helping with safety watch, moving cut debris, traffic control, and general logistics. Each shift is about 4 hours.

If you’ve been waiting on the north trails to reopen, this is the most direct way to help move that forward. Even one volunteer makes a huge difference, and these roles are truly essential and appreciated.
