🇺🇸 Serving and Developing the Next Generation

Today, our Club met at Logan's Roadhouse and welcomed Hank Cartegena, who gave us an overview of the Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Program here in Augusta.

We appreciate Hank taking the time to share about the impact Civil Air Patrol is having on young people in the Augusta area.

Thank you, Hank, for the work you do investing in the next generation!

We also held our weekly raffle. Congratulations to Bill Phillips, this week’s unlucky winner!

AWRC partnered with the Martinez-Evans Rotary Club and invited the city of Augusta Mayor-Elect Steven Kendrick as our speaker. He is on the right track to hear issues/concerns from the community and create solutions to solve those problems before he takes office in January. If you need to report any concerns, please click on the appropriate QR code to leave a message or attend one of his townhall meetings and share your concerns in person.
M-E Kendrick has a vision to flip this city to be an economic powerhouse in Georgia.

🍎📚 Welcome Back, Teachers! 📚🍎

Augusta West Rotary was excited to kick off the new school year by hosting one of our annual service projects—our “Welcome Back, Teachers” Party at Warren Road Elementary School! 🎉

We started the morning by providing breakfast and plenty of snacks to help fuel the amazing teachers and staff as they prepare to welcome their students back for another year of learning, growth, and success.

Our teachers give so much to our children and our community, and we’re proud to show our appreciation in a small but meaningful way. ❤️

Here’s to a fantastic school year ahead! Welcome back, teachers—and thank you for all you do! 🍎✏️

Today was our first Virtual Meeting for the Club with Welton Chase and Dave Thomas providing an excellent overview of the world of Cisco. Did you know they were originally a company from San Francisco; hence, the name “Cisco” and logo Golden Gate Bridge?
If you would like to join us each month as we invite speakers from all across the world to share their business successes, then consider becoming an Augusta West Rotarian. Our only requirement is attending one meeting/event per month. (You can attend virtually, in-person, socials or service projects.) Virtual meetings will commence on the fourth week of every month from 7:30-8:20am. Next month our virtual meeting is WED, 26 August (speaker TBD). If interested in learning more about Rotary International, then contact Kelly Knitter at (808)499-8025 or Debra Vernon at (520)220-9996.
Dues are only $25/mo or $300/yr, plus a $100 donation to the Paul Harris Foundation.

On 7/22, Rich Laschober and Kelly Knitter (and son, Thomas) had the opportunity to help the Nursing College of Augusta set up for their Healthy Grandparents “Children’s” health fair at Augusta University, Summerville Campus. The following day was pretty busy for the nursing students as they provided free medical health checks for kids in the community.

Aubrey Highsmith and Kelly Knitter represented Augusta West Rotary Club at today’s service project helping build beds for kids with “Sleep in Heavenly Peace.” We partnered with 68 other volunteers from Lowe’s, VFW 12190, Lions Club, Ft Gordon Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS), AUSA members (Sophia Galifianakis) and others to build 30x beds.
Save the Date: next “Build a Bed” event is 29 August at VFW 12190 (0800-1100).
If you can’t help build beds, then you can always donate new pillows, twin sheets and comforters for kids in need.

Approximately 25 people attended today’s Martinez-Evans Rotary Club (MERC) traditional meeting, with 7x attendees coming from AWRC. We enjoyed the fellowship and meeting new Rotarians. Their newest member (Juan) provided a wonderful classification talk about his military service as a surgical tech in the Army. Rich Laschober won the MERC raffle drawing this week ($107); he graciously donated the money to Juan’s non-profit organization called “Marci Boxing Club” in Grovetown.
It was nice to see a large group of Rotarians fill the clubhouse once again.

The AWRC President’s gavel has officially transferred from Jimmy Buchanan to Kelly Knitter. We give much thanks to Jimmy and the entire BoD for their leadership this past year; and we pray for much success for the new BoD stepping up to lead us through exciting change in the year to come. “Service Above Self”.
We want to congratulate Bob Schloesser for earning his 2nd PHF, and to Aubrey Highsmith for winning Rotarian of the Year 2025-2026. Rett Harbeson almost had a ticket Win, but he didn’t!😜

Happy 4th of July weekend everyone! Stay safe while having fun!

AWRC was onsite at Lowe’s, Evans this morning to help build beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP). With 30+ volunteers from all over the community - and with supplies
Donated by Lowe’s - we were able to build 10x beds in 3x hours. Save the date: next bed building event is Sat, 25 July 8-11am at Lowe’s in Evans. If anyone knows a place to temporarily store the beds, please reach out to Kelly Knitter at (808)499-8025. If your schedule is too busy to build a bed, then SHP is also in need of brand new twin sheets with 1x pillow case. Volunteering / Donating is living our Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”
FACT: 15,000 children in the Greater Augusta area do not have a bed of their own. Let’s do our part to reduce that number significantly!

On April 23, 2026, Mr. Rich Forzano, Augusta Chapter President for Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), visited Augusta West to discuss the nonprofit’s mission and impact in the CSRA community.

SHP believes every child deserves a safe, comfortable place to sleep and works to make that belief a reality by building and donating beds to children in need.

Thank you, Mr. Forzano, for your presentation and for the meaningful work you do to support our community.
