Youth Leadership Columbia County Class of 2026 enjoyed a full, fun and informative day at the beautiful Georgia Supreme Court - where they participated in a mock trial – and the gorgeous Georgia state capitol.

At the capitol they heard from elected officials and other state leaders. They toured the capitol and Governor’s office and sat in the galleries of the Senate and House Chambers. They were able to hear the debate on SB 443, which increases penalties for protesters who block public roads, highways or bridges.

Youth Leadership Columbia County Class of 2026 experienced Healthcare Day last week. It began with an eye opening SIMULATION of a car accident with 3 high school students. Gold Cross EMS, Columbia County’s Sheriff’s Department, Fire & Rescue Training Center and Coroner’s office did a great job explaining to the students the reality of a fatal accident. From there the students went to Doctors Hospital, where they saw a demonstration of a patient being presented at a Level 2 Trauma facility. The students toured the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber and JMS Burn Center, visited a surgical suite with a Davinci robot -and learned how to stop the bleed and use a tourniquet.

Thank you to our Day Chairs John T. Y. Smith and April Porterfield. Thank you to our sponsors Gold Cross EMS, Doctors Hospital of Augusta and Augusta Surgical Group.

CC Class of 2026 Military Day did not disappoint. We spent time with 2 Star Major General Mark Miles and Garrison Commander COL Anthony Kazor, hearing about the importance of Ft. Gordon to the CSRA, our country and beyond. Ft. Gordon’s population – over 20,000 service members, 12,500 civilian workers, 20,800 family members, and 61,000 retirees and family members contribute to the 3rd largest metro economy in GA.

LCC 2026 witnessed military dogs in action and the emotional funeral honors and flag folding demonstration. They participated in EST 2000 shooting, toured barracks, heard from drill sergeants and signal students. To finish the day the joint classes – LCC and Leadership Augusta – participated in a marching and cadence exercise and then heard from Dr. Tom Clark share the Ragged Old Flag poem.

We had great LCC leadership who planned and participated in the day: Day Chairs, Dr. Corey Simpson, LCC ’22 and Dean Smith, LCC ’25, Dr Tom Clark, LCC ’18, Sheldon Moorer, LCC ’23, Scott Anderson, LCC ’23 and Cathy Shaw, LCC ’18. Shout out to Anne Bowman, in the Public Affairs office at Ft. Gordon for her help.

Thank you to our sponsors: ADP, First Command, Georgialina Networks, and Veterans Pressure Washing

Lastly, thank you, as always, to the BEST LEADERSHIP DUO – Rhonda Banks, LCC ’10 and Alex Griffin, LCC ’23.

02/22/2026

Leadership Columbia County Class of 2026 Education and Workforce Day proved why Columbia County (and our region) is one of the best places to live not only in our state, but our nation. We heard from not one, not two, but three college presidents - Dr. Kendrick’s Ho**er, Auguta Technical College, Dr Russell Keen, LCC EF ‘16, Augusta University, and Dr. Lester McCorn, Paine College. We were delighted to hear from key Columbia County School District representatives including Dr. Steven Flynt, LCC EF ‘22, Superintendent, Dr. Dana Bing, Food & Nutrition Director, and Dr. Brian Campbell, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

One of the many highlights of the day was our visit to Greenbrier High School, where we were welcomed by the Pack’s band. We toured the CTAE pathways and heard from Brooks Smith, LCC ’20, Director of CCSD CTAE Programs and a panel of students and advisors involved with work-based learning.

We visited the Mosaic Center and heard from Executive Director Mary C. Myers, LCC ‘25, with the Center for New Beginnings, discuss how they are helping children with Autism.

During lunch we treated four of our class members, who are expecting babies any day now, with gifts and cupcakes. Something’s in the LCC water.

Our day ended with a tour of the JA Discovery Center and hearing about the Chamber and CCSD Foundations from Dr. Lyle Hogue and Ashley Herring Whitaker.

Thank you to our sponsors, The 1790 Club, Pete Alewine Pool Co., the Columbia Columbia School District and the Columbia County School District Foundation.

A huge shout out to our amazing Day Chairs, Nichole Hollar Spencer, LCC ‘24, with Augusta Technical College, and Kristen Carroll, LCC ‘25, Columbia County School District. And lots of gratitude to our program chairs, Rhonda Banks, LCC ‘10, and Alex Griffin, LCC ‘23, for helping me keep the group together and stay on time.
