For donor Judith Stoffer, a lifelong love of libraries began with curiosity and a dark staircase in a small South Dakota general store. At just five years old, Judith wandered upstairs one Saturday night and discovered the town’s tiny library and the librarian who would hand her a book each week to take home and return after she had “read it.”

“That was it,” Judith recalls. “I visited her every Saturday night for years.”

That early experience sparked a lifelong connection to libraries, reading, and community. Judith later became part of the original committee that helped build Humboldt County’s beautiful library facility and continues to be a dedicated library supporter today. From checking out book club reads to donating books back to the collection, Judith’s story is a reminder of how meaningful libraries can become throughout a lifetime.

Thank you, Judith, for your continued support of Humboldt County Libraries and the Humboldt Library Foundation.

“I grew up in a house full of books, and some of my clearest memories are of my father reading in the evenings.”

For Humboldt Library Foundation board member Erika Wright, a love of reading started early. She remembers staying up past bedtime reading under the covers with a flashlight, sharing favorite books with her father, and growing up in a home where books were part of everyday life. That love of reading stayed with her and continues to shape who she is today.

This Father’s Day, the Humboldt Library Foundation’s Buy a Book initiative offers a meaningful way to honor the dads, parents, and loved ones who helped inspire a love of stories, learning, and imagination. Donations can be made in honor or memory of someone special, with personalized bookplates placed inside donated books that become part of Humboldt County Library collections for the community to enjoy.

For Gregg Gold, PhD, the library changed the course of his life. “I would not have a PhD if it was not for my public library,” Gregg shares. “The public library gave me access to books and the knowledge necessary to successfully do research so I could be admitted to my PhD program.”

Today, Gregg supports the Humboldt Library Foundation because he believes libraries are “an essential and vital resource for everyone in the community.” Stories like his are a reminder that libraries open doors, create opportunities, and provide access to knowledge for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Thank you, Gregg, for supporting our libraries and helping ensure these resources continue serving our community for generations to come.

Did you know the Humboldt Library Foundation helps fund nearly 60% of new books in our local libraries? That means more stories on the shelves, more up-to-date resources, and more opportunities for our community to learn, explore, and grow. And books are just part of the story.

Part of the $200,000 raised also supported digital collections like Libby, research tools like genealogy laptops, equipment and technology upgrades, and programs that keep our libraries welcoming and accessible for everyone. Thank you to our donors for making this possible.

We’re excited to welcome Cindy Hori to the Humboldt Library Foundation Board.

For Cindy, libraries have always been more than just buildings. They were a place of discovery, curiosity, and encouragement from a young age, where a lifelong love of learning first took root.

That passion carried her through a career in finance and accounting, where she has spent years supporting organizations and helping others better understand the financial side of their work.

She currently serves as Finance Director at Cypress Grove Cheese in Arcata. Now, Cindy brings both her professional expertise and her deep appreciation for libraries to HLF, supporting the spaces that continue to inspire learning and connection.

Please join us in welcoming Cindy to the board!

Donor Spotlight: Hannah Eisloeffel

Hannah has loved libraries for as long as she can remember. She visits both the Eureka Main Library and the Fortuna branch with her daughter several times a week. “We probably check out thirty books a week,” she laughs. “We read together for an hour every night, and she reads even more on her own during the day. Watching her fall in love with books has been amazing.”

The library is more than a place to borrow books. It’s “the heartbeat of the community,” filled with connection, learning, and shared experiences. She especially loves the Buy a Book fundraiser, where donated books carry nameplates honoring loved ones. “Their name doesn’t fade,” she says. “It keeps living on through stories.”

The library is woven into her family’s daily life. “Having the library as part of your life is so rewarding in ways you don’t even realize,” she says. “It’s something that gets passed down. I imagine my daughter will be a library donor someday too, because of what the library has done for her.”

Thank you, Hannah, for helping keep our libraries full of life.
