As the county deliberates on the Climate Action Plan, it's important to realize that most greenhouse gas emissions come from commuting (see pie chart from the RCAP). We need better strategies to reduce commuting than getting every to drive EVs! Like what...?

This is Maryland, right next to Washington D.C. Humboldt could also offer free transit... has anyone seen the ridership figures when the fares are waived?

Seems like the best way to meet carbon-emission goals is to cut back the use of energy. We don't need to mandate electric vehicles if we just drive less in the first place. No more residential growth would also help immensely. More people, more energy. Right?

At a special council meeting Tuesday, Eureka looked at the Humboldt County Climate Action Plan. Council members hashed out how goals to reduce carbon emissions significantly in the next five years …

"California’s renewable energy goals — 25 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2045, enough to achieve net zero carbon emissions — almost certainly cannot be met without offshore wind development, including the farm slated for off the coast of Humboldt County." That means the state goals embrace unsustainable energy demand.

The CPUC voted to allow the state’s Department of Water Resources to acquire 10.6 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2037, 7.6 of which must be from offshore wind. California’s renewable energy goals…

Wow, looks like AI data centers are energy hogs. Like crypto-mining. Another high-tech nightmare!

AI is everywhere these days, which means more data centers eating up more electricity. There’s no easy fix, but some combination of efficiency, flexibility and new technologies could ease the burden.

A new twist. Unfortunately, several local tribes are opposing offshore wind. I expect this will be resolved eventually, but I think it's very short sighted reaction to a critical need.

Last week, the Yurok Tribe and the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria each announced their respective councils have voted to formally oppose offshore wind development. The votes came a da…
