We are at the end of celebrating Older Americans Month! This month, our staff travelled around Humboldt County and met with partnering cities to discuss our mutual vision for helping older adults champion their health.

We have shared a brief clip from the Eureka City Meeting on May 5th, where our lovely Social Services Manager, Susan Cleverdon, discussed how our agency helps older adults age in place with strength and dignity.

The California Commission on Aging invites you to attend an important informational hearing examining the growing crisis in supportive housing for older adults in California.

Nowhere to Go: The Crisis in Supportive Housing for Older Californians

Nearly half (48%) of people experiencing homelessness in California are older than 50, and 41% of homeless adults became unhoused for the first time after they turned 50 (UCSF report). Housing that includes support for aging adults has often been overlooked.

The Commission will examine the shortage of suitable housing for older people transitioning out of homelessness, the challenges in building more of it, and ways to close the gap.

As our population ages, the need for supportive housing that is safe, stable, and affordable has never been more urgent.
