Birds are on the move!

"BirdCast is an amazing tool created Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Colorado State University. It forecasts nocturnal bird migrations on a map of the continental United States with predictions of how many individual birds will be on the move each night, 3 hours after local sunset, updated every 6 hours. These forecasts are not only exciting to look at as we anticipate the amazing spectacle that is bird migration, but they also help inform us of when and where it will be most important to dim the lights at night for nocturnal birds that can become disoriented by light pollution.

Grand Canyon State Park recently announced a bobcat was found dead from rodenticide inside the park. Just a reminder that rodenticide is a non-targeted chemical. The rodent that consumes the poison does not die right away leaving time for it to be eaten by another animal. Where what's called bioaccumulation occurs, the toxin is now in the second animal. The poison might not be strong enough to kill the predator but it stays in their systems and if the predator eats enough prey items that have consumed the rodenticide it will eventually kill the predator like it did in this case. Please consider non-chemical methods for rodent control

A bobcat found dead at Grand Canyon National Park died from rat poison, prompting park staff to remind those who live in the park that rodent poisons are banned there.

After almost three decades of waiting, last month the United States Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the wolverine (Gulo gulo) as threatened due to climate change. Female wolverine make snow dens to have and rear their kits. With the decease in snow pack, it has made it difficult for wolverine's to produce off spring.
While the wolverine has presumed extirpated in California since the 1920s, earlier this year Yosemite National Park had confirmed sighting on one of their remote cameras!

California has a new state bat, the pallid bat (antrozous pallidus)! Why a bat? First, bats are just cool. Secondly according to State Sen. Caroline Menjivoar, D-Los Angeles who authored the legislation"...[W]ill help promote appreciation, study, and protection of bats in this state." Which currently according to the Nature Conservancy more that half of the bat species in the Unites State are in delince or listed as endangered.
The pallid bat was chosen due to is aiding in agriculture by consuming crop destroying insects and wildfire prevention by eating the bark beetles and wood borers!

The spooky season is upon us 👻 Just a friend reminder to not make Halloween a nightmare for wildlife by not hanging up fake spider webs outside 🕸 Not just birds can become entangled and injured because of the fake webs. Any wildlife moving along shrubs can end up trapped in these webs and might not always be seen to receive help. So, let's keep the spider webs inside 🕷🍬

Fake spider webs might delight trick-or-treaters on Halloween, but those decorations — and other trappings of the holiday — can be a real threat to animals, experts warn.

Today is . What does that mean? The human population has used up the yearly natural resources produced by the planet. Therefore, for the rest of the year we will be running on a deficit of those natural resources.
Simple little changes in you daily life can make a HUGE difference.
Turn your refrigerator down during the cold months.
Fill your freeze with food items or jugs of water to keep your freeze from running more often.
Unplug non-essential electrical devices when not in use i.e., cell phone charger, toaster, microwave, the television.
Turn off the water when brushing your teeth or shaving.
Wash clothes in cold water.
Turn of the light when leaving the room, even if it's for a moment.
Little changes can lead to big possibilities.

July 16th is World Snake Day! Why care about snakes? They slither, shed their skin, they flick their tongue. They are also very social. Rattlesnakes will hang out with friends and family. Female rattlesnakes care for their off spring for a few weeks after hatching and will even baby sit other female’s off spring in exchange for her own babysitter of course. 30% of snake species are Viviparous meaning they have live births (1).
Snakes are believed to be 98 to 142 MILLION years old, with the earliest known fossil record of snakes was during the Cretaceous period (2).
How do they get around without legs? By using their muscles to push their scales against the ground or other objects (3).
Why do snakes shed their skin? The outermost layer of skin does not grow with the snake; therefore, snakes will rub off the skin, the skin usually comes off in one piece and inside out (3).
And the tongue flicking what is that about? Well, on the roof of a snake’s mouth is an adaptation called the Jacobson’s organ, this allows them to pick up scent molecules by using their tongue (3). This is just some of the awesome things snakes do! If you would like to learn more about snakes, check out the links below.

California has had its second wolverine (Gulo gulo) conformation sighting in 100 years! Wolverine's were native to parts of California and were eventually extricated in the 1920's from over hunting for their fur and the dislike by the ranching community. Wolverine's are solitary apex carnivores, that make dens from snow to care for their offspring which are called kits.

The elusive creatures disappeared from the Golden State in 1922

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is taking emergency action to help protect the critically endangered California condors after many have died from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

Testing of the 2016 HPAI vaccine for its safety and efficacy for California condors will be underway soon. This trial is funded by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and will be focused on vultures in North Carolina beginning in May 2023.
