Jitokeze Wamama Wafrika was founded following the vision of Philipine Chepkoech Kidulah, a native of West Pokot county in Northwestern Kenya, who having experienced the impact of droughts on the food system and peace in her community, chose to work with vulnerable women in the community in order to build their capacity to access food and income in a sustainable manner, in 2010 she was joined by Christine Buettgen and Christine Reiher and together they founded Jitokeze Wamama Wafrika.

Yesterday, we were delighted to receive visitors from the county of West Pokot and the department of works and fire safety. The purpose of this training is to give participants skills, knowledge, and expertise that will enable them to identify the conditions capable of causing fire, know how to use a fire extinguisher, respond approximately to fire emergencies, follow the evacuation plan, and appropriately implement fire emergency procedures.

The group has 16 members: 12 women and 4 men. Oron SHG is one of the groups we have worked with since 2016. Initially, we supported the group with a 10,000-liter water tank and chicken nets to boost their farming and poultry projects. In 2017, however, the area was hit by a severe drought that led to the deaths of animals and the wilting of crops. The group, however, observed that camels had survived the drought. They decided to pull their resources together to buy camels for breeding and start a camel project, as they believed that camels are resilient to drought.

They managed to buy five camels—four were heifers, and one was a bull. Among the four heifers, two were pregnant, and due to climatic conditions, all the calves did not survive and ended up dying. This year, three heifers are expected to give birth. The group is doing well, and they are already establishing a petrol station starting in November 2023. Each member had to contribute a total of 450 dollars for their target total of 7,200 dollars. Petrol stations are doing well, though they are not fully functioning due to some challenges facing them with the supplier. The group is also planning to set up a canteen for selling engine oils and other requirements.

Jitokeze offers a diversity of courses; one of them is hairdressing and beauty therapy. We provide a platform for women to attend training programs to help empower themselves, with a focus on health and well-being, economic and social development, decision-making, and the development of support networks. We train young and vulnerable girls to acquire skills in a hairdressing course, aiming to improve their livelihood in the future and to be sustainable. In the hair stylist role, you will shampoo, blow-dry, cut, color, and style the customer's hair. Through our field visits, we are impressed to see what our girls are doing in their workshops. Most of them have set up shop in the nearby market, but they are facing a lot of challenges in starting up businesses due to a lack of start-up capital. This year, we are planning to offer business support to those who have completed their training by lending them loans so that they can start their own businesses as well as create more job opportunities in society.

Education isn’t always deemed an option for girls in Kenya, particularly in remote, rural areas. FGM is conducted to help secure a higher dowry for those girls who are cut often and then married to older men at a young age. At this point, their education will usually stop. When welcoming girls to our safe houses, we ensure education plays a key role. By educating girls, their opportunities as women are broadened. As of last year, we would like to thank God for continuing to bless us through our donars and friends of Jitokeze and for giving us donations to support these girls. Your donations, prayers, advice, linkages, and moral support have been so instrumental in making it possible for us to have a great impact on empowering vulnerable women in West Pokot to improve their wellbeing and their resilience to the realities of droughts that increasingly continue to plague our community here in West Pokot. In 2023, we managed to take six girls to Nasokols primary school and one to Nasokols secondary school.

This year, we decided to concentrate on rescuing girls who were rescued from FGM,early marriages, and vulnerable ones after our center was recognized as a rescue center by the county government of West Pokot. We took forty-three to school,thirty-five to different girls schools in the region, three to boys schools, and twelve to primary school. The center has provided all the requirements they needed, such as mattresses, blankets, boxes, books, and pens, among many others. After taking a half-term break, through devotion and reflection, we continue to provide psychosocial support to our students, bringing diverse complementary approaches to providing appropriate care together. Due to those who have experienced stressful situations, changes in behavior, physical reactions, emotional reactions, and spiritual reactions With daily morning and evening devotions. weekly reflections and Sunday services.

We hope and pray that God will continue to support us so that we will continue to support more girls in the coming years.

Hello! Today, we would like to share our story about the tailoring program. You will be taught the basic tailoring techniques and practical skills involved in the hand production of tailored garments. This includes pattern cutting, blocks, and construction techniques for tailored garments. The project does this by identifying vulnerable women in our community, recruiting them into the program, training and supporting them to engage in sustainable livelihood. The women also have facilities to engage in activities that support their spiritual and mental wellbeing.

Jitokeze Wamama Wafrika is empowering vulnerable women to overcome poverty and improve their resilience to the impacts of climate change. Apart from training them to acquire skills in hairdressing and tailoring programs, we also offer them training in sustainable farming and business support. Due to the low rainfall experienced in the country, we adopted a new technology where you can conserve water, called a multilevel garden. The main reasons we adopted the system are that it requires little space to establish, mixture of manure and soil and produces a high yield is produced. We trained students on how to establish and manage portable gardens and bio-intensive agriculture. We also trained our girls on how to prepare seedbeds for seedlings and how to plant different vegetables in the kitchen garden. With the help of field officers, SHG members and students were trained on the need for tree planting, especially the Macademia tree, which produces Macademia nuts that are essential nutrients for dietary fiber and antioxidants that help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and digestive health. Students were also trained on how to plant garlic, which is a botanical vegetable, and ginger. The main agenda is to ensure food production is plentiful in the center and in their homes, and also to learn how to take care of the environment by planting trees.
We hope and pray that God will continue to support us so that we will continue to support more girls in the coming years.

Today we would like to share and celebrate the success stories our girls have achieved since they started their business after completing their training at Jitokeze. Most of our girls have opened their businesses in various areas of Pokot County, and they are doing very well in their businesses. We contacted them for a follow-up visit to their workshop in the areas of Lomut,Mnagei, Murpus, and Lelan, and what we have seen there is captivating and encouraging. The girls out there are showing the art of generosity by helping each other by training others who were not in our training center. This act of virtue is what we need in society. Through self-help groups (SHGs), we have seen girls empowering each other. One girl from Murpus has managed to buy a sewing machine through SHGs; another has bought a quarter-hectare of land and built a house where she has opened a workshop business and a hotel. And through their business, they have managed to provide support to their family by providing them with essential needs and also educating their children. Our girls are willing to share what they have with the community. They are teaching us that none of us is empty, and the problem is not a lack of resources but the willingness to share skills and knowledge with the community and help those who need our help in society. Through training women in the program in psychological and social support, we have witnessed growth in their individual and community capacities through love, repentance, faith, obedience, purpose, fearlessness, and prayer. They have been able to lift their families and communities out of poverty and find inner peace. We hope and pray that God will continue to support us so that we will continue to support more girls in the coming years.

What a day it was at Nakuyen North Pokot! Jitokeze Wamama Wafrika was joyous to be invited and be part of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM), observed annually on February 6, which provides an opportunity for all stakeholders involved in ending FGM to celebrate achievements, advocate for abandonment of the practice, and raise awareness.

Computers have made our life easier in these decades. Schools and colleges around the world are using these machines and internet technologies to teach students digitally and creatively with data visualization. Uses of the computer in education will explore creativity and imagination in the mind of students. Drawing tools, spreadsheet, Audio, and Video lectures and power point presentations, etc, are very helpful for students to learn more deeply and accurately. That created the new education business model called the smart classroom, and also digital classrooms.Apart from having,Tailoring class, hairdressing and beauty therapy and also adult class for our students, Jitokeze Wamama Wafrika has again decided to come up with computer classes for our beautiful girls to empower them with knowledge and skills so that they cope up with the current digital world.
