Big win for the youth leadership team, the Changemakers, at the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority meeting Tuesday evening.

After 11 months of research, conversations, and meetings with city and county staff, Recology Del Norte, and the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority, the Changemakers successfully advocated for more public trash & recycling containers in Crescent City.

Their proposal was officially approved!

This didn’t happen overnight...these young leaders took the time to understand how the system works, where the gaps were, and what solutions would actually help. They met directly with decision-makers, asked thoughtful questions, and presented practical recommendations.

As a result…
👉🏽 new trash & recycling containers will be added at 4 locations, including downtown, the skate park, the t-ball field at 5th and D St, and along Pebble Beach Dr.
👉🏾 1 existing container will be relocated to better serve the community
👉🏿 additional improvements may still be added in the future.

Throughout the process, the Changemakers worked closely with local agencies to better understand how decisions are made and how different organizations work together to care for the community.

“I feel the group did a great job presenting and asking questions,” said Jon Perry of Recology Del Norte. “I feel they learned a lot about the cooperation of different agencies, and the process is not always easy… I feel this is a win for the Changemakers and the community.”

This happened through persistence, relationship-building, and young people stepping forward to improve their community. We’re proud of the Changemakers for helping create a cleaner and more cared-for public spaces across our community.

This past Saturday, Smith River Elementary School was filled with culture and learning as students gathered for the Tolowa Cultural Learning Saturday School.

Through collaboration between True North, Del Norte County Unified School District, DNUSD Title VI American Indian Education Program, NCIDC Indian Education Program, Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery, educators, and community leaders, students experienced a day of hands-on cultural learning.

Students rotated through workshops exploring Tolowa history & regalia, the cultural importance of salmon, traditional cooking practices, and cultural art activities. They also got to visit the Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery, learning directly from Tribal staff and community knowledge-keepers about environmental stewardship and hatchery operations.

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was seeing the students learn through culture, story, activities, food, and shared experience.

Events like this show the power of partnership, and create meaningful opportunities for students to gain deeper connection to community, culture, and each other. A big thanks to everyone who helped bring this beautiful day of learning and collaboration to life!

For generations, communities across the North Coast have worked to protect the forests, waters, and sacred places that shape this region.

AB 2494 reflects a shift toward stewardship that prioritizes Tribal co-management, wildfire resilience, biodiversity, and long-term care for future generations.

Across our rural and Tribal communities, people continue organizing around the belief that healthy communities and healthy ecosystems are deeply connected.

The decisions made by our elected leaders impact our communities every day. Take some time to learn more about the candidates running for Congressional and Assembly seats serving the North Coast.

Michael Greer’s confident that Del Norte will vote for him — they have in the past and things haven’t changed, he says. The Republican candidate for California’s Assembly District 2 is not only the current Trustee Area 5 representative on the Del Norte Unified School District Board of Truste...

Leaders from across Humboldt County came together for our Leadership Assembly to connect and spend time in conversation about the work ahead .

Folks working on different issues, like education and immigration, started seeing where their work overlaps and how they can support each other. New relationships formed, and ideas for collaboration started taking shape.

We also saw strong youth leadership throughout the day, with young people stepping into roles and helping guide the space. We love seeing these connections form and the momentum starting to build! 💖

What happens when families name what they need…and then lead?

At Zane Middle School, parents shared their concerns about the transition to high school: questions, uncertainty, and a lot of unknowns.

So they organized --> ‘Prepa para la Prepa’ was planned by parents, in partnership with Eureka High and the ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) to create a space for families to learn, ask questions, and feel more prepared for what’s ahead.

The moment that stayed with folks? The students. They shared what they were nervous about going into high school… and what it actually ended up being like.

One parent said, “I was feeling nervous about this transition, but after hearing them speak, I’m not nervous anymore.”

That’s what this work looks like. Families raising their voices; students leading with honesty; and a community showing up for each other.

“If even one person left feeling more at ease, then we were successful.” -Tim Olson, Spanish Teacher at Eureka High School
