KU does not intentionally use AI to create content and does not endorse the use of AI to create art. We actively employ artists to design collateral and merchandise for the Kinetic Grand Championship. We are a small team of volunteers who appreciate people showing up to help bring the race to Humboldt County every Memorial Day weekend. We also support our volunteers. The widespread availability of AI being embedded in common tools is new and sometimes undetectable. We do not scrutinize volunteers who may use these tools.
We welcome a proactive conversation but we can not allow our community to tear down our hardworking volunteers if they see digital media or event flyers that look like they may contain AI content. We kindly remind you that your comments are being read by real people and your actions may have unintended consequences.
The criticism around using AI to make flyers or posters is valid and we understand the impact. Using tools such Photoshop, Canva, or 3D printing with generative AI features, creates a gray area, and we will be looking to our community in the coming months for guidance on how to implement policies in KU communications and the Kinetic Grand Championship. We will also look for artists who may want to donate their time and talents to making flyers for small events, fundraisers, and campaigns.
The Kinetic Grand Championship will cost nearly $70,000 to produce next year and that money will be raised by a handful of volunteers who are doing this work in between meetings at their day jobs, after their kids have gone to bed, or whenever they can find a tiny pocket of free time. Please show up to our fundraisers. Make donations. And, most importantly, uplift each other by showing gratitude to those who are truly trying their best.
