What an incredible way to celebrate the first community outing for HAA's new 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁!

Before anything else, a HUGE thank you to 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 & 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗟𝗮𝘄 and 𝗨𝗕𝗡𝗖 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁. 💚🏍️

Their generosity, collaboration and support helped turn this idea into a reality.

Redwood News stopped by Bikes by the Bay to talk with us about why sensory-friendly spaces at community events matter, and how having a place to step away can make the difference between participating and having to stay home.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲. 💚

And the story of how it began makes Saturday even more special.

After HAA spoke at a UBNC meeting in April, 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗟𝗮𝘄 surprised us with an incredible offer: Shark Law would donate a 10' × 20' 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 to HAA, complete with our logo and custom graphics.

We were incredibly grateful...although at first, we weren't quite sure what we were going to do with a 10' × 20' tent! 😂

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿. ♾️

What if we turned it into a portable sensory space HAA could bring to community events, giving autistic kids, teens and adults a place to step away from the noise, crowds and stimulation 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗧 having to leave the event altogether?

And the 𝗛𝗔𝗔 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 was born. 💚♾️

Our custom tent isn't ready yet, so Allen and Shark Law went one step further and 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 10' × 20' 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 so we could debut the Retreat at Bikes by the Bay.

💚 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿. ♾️

The idea for Humboldt Autism Alliance's 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 actually began when Allen Scoville of Shark Law offered to donate a 10' × 20' tent to HAA.

That incredibly generous offer got us thinking: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁?

What if we could create a portable sensory space that could travel with us to community events — a place where members of our ASD community could 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 • 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 • 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 when things become overwhelming?

And from that conversation, the 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 was born. 💚

While our permanent tent is being created with custom graphics, Allen and Shark Law have also generously loaned us the 10' × 20' tent we're using in the meantime.

This portable space will allow HAA to participate in more community events of all kinds, while giving autistic kids, teens, and adults a place to step away from the noise, crowds, movement, and stimulation when they need it, 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. 💚

We are incredibly grateful to 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗟𝗮𝘄 for not only making this project possible, but for sparking the idea that started it all.
