Have you seen this pesky invader?
Barbed goat grass (Aegilops triuncialis) is an invasive annual grass that spreads quickly in rangelands, grasslands, roadsides, and disturbed areas. Its barbed seed heads attach easily to livestock, wildlife, clothing, vehicles, and equipment, allowing it to move across the landscape.
Once established, it can dramatically reduce forage quality, displace native vegetation, and reduce habitat quality.
How you can help:
- Learn to identify barbed goat grass and monitor the lands where you live and work.
- Clean boots, vehicles, equipment, and livestock handling areas when moving between sites with goat grass.
- Report suspected sightings to local land managers and post an observation to iNaturalist!
- Share this information with neighbors, friends, and partners.
- Treat it!
HCRCD is working with local partners to develop local strategies for goat grass treatment (including prescribed fire and mowing), but early detection is still our best opportunity to prevent widespread establishment.
