Our mission -🐺 To preserve and protect Mexican wolves, red wolves and other wild canid species, with purpose and passion, through carefully managed breeding, reintroduction and inspiring education programs. 🦊 💛 The Endangered Wolf Center is on the north side of the highway, on property leased from Washington University's Tyson Research Center. Private tours are offered Wednesdays through Sundays

and public tours are offered Fridays through Sundays. Reservations are required for all tours and are easily made by calling 636-938-5900 or visiting endangeredwolfcenter.org.

Our animal care team has some heavy responsibilities–and they could really use a little help hauling the load.

This Wishlist Wednesday, we’re hoping to add a sturdy steel garden cart to help move chow bags, water tubs, and habitat maintenance tools. What a wild start to Summer Camp!

Swipe through to see some highlights from Week 1–campers exploring the creek, learning about endangered wolves and foxes, exploring the forest, and sharing plenty of giggles (and howls) along the way.

We’ve loved seeing their curiosity and confidence grow with every question and discovery!

One of the highlights of summer camp at the Endangered Wolf Center (besides seeing the animals in our care) is our weekly creek walk!

Campers love searching the creek for cool rocks and geodes–and this year, we’re hoping to upgrade how we crack those geodes open so they can get an even better look at the sparkling minerals inside.

We’re aiming to add a locking chain clamp “geode cracker” to our tools so campers can safely and more easily open the geodes they discover and learn about natural minerals up close.

Would you guess that Cooper is a red fox? 🦊

He may not look like the classic rusty-red fox, but Cooper is actually a melanistic red fox, which are native to Missouri.

“Melanistic” means he has extra dark pigment in his fur, giving him a much darker coat than the typical red you’d expect.

Red foxes hold a pretty impressive record: they have the largest native range of any carnivore on the planet, living across North America, Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa. Wherever they roam, they play an important role in keeping ecosystems balanced.

Have you ever heard of an ungulate?

Ungulate is a term that refers to any hoofed animal. While the Endangered Wolf Center does not house any ungulates, they’re incredibly important to the larger canids in our care because they’re a key part of their natural diet in the wild.

American Red Wolves on the East Coast and Mexican wolves in the Southwest hunt white-tailed deer, elk, and even bison, depending on what is native to their respective ranges.

African painted dogs in southern Africa will target prey like impala and kudu. In healthy ecosystems, these predator–prey relationships help keep herbivore populations in balance and support plant communities and other wildlife.

At the EWC, we partner with the Certified Bowhunters of St. Louis County, whose members donate bow‑hunted white‑tailed deer. This partnership helps address the high deer population in the St. Louis area and provides whole‑prey meals that support the nutritional and behavioral needs of the endangered animals in our care.

So on Ungulate Awareness Day, we’re celebrating the hoofed species that play a vital role in a healthy ecosystem–and the people who help us connect those dots for conservation.
