At the heart of every great writer is someone who understands the power of a single letter to change a life.

This Father's Day, we want to celebrate The Dad Letter Project. In this volunteer-driven initiative, caring dads write heartfelt, handwritten letters to anyone who could use encouragement, a laugh, or simply a reminder that someone out there cares. Because sometimes the most powerful writing isn't a novel or a poem. Sometimes it's one letter, arriving in a mailbox at exactly the right moment.

At The Writers' Colony, we believe that words matter. That writing connects us. That the page, in any form, has the power to heal.

Happy Father's Day to every dad who has ever picked up a pen for someone else!

Happy Summer Solstice from the Writer’s Colony at Dairy Hollow! ☀️🌿

With extra hours of daylight stretching over the Ozark hills, our residents have just a little more time to watch the sun filter through the trees, find their rhythm at the keyboard, and let new ideas spark.

But optimizing productivity doesn't just mean typing furiously until dark. In the writing world, light also symbolizes clarity—the breakthrough moment in a stubborn chapter, the perfect metaphor, or the sudden understanding of a character's true motive.

Whether you are writing from one of our sanctuary suites today or working from your kitchen table, we hope you lean into the vibrant energy of the season.

How are you spending the longest day of the year? Let us know in comments below.

Big news out of the WCDH kitchen! 🍲✨

Starting today, we are thrilled to announce that The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow will now be providing dinner on Saturdays!

For years, our Monday–Friday culinary program has been a beloved cornerstone of the WCDH residency experience, giving writers the gift of uninterrupted creative time without worrying about "what’s for dinner." Now, we are extending that nourishment through the weekend so you can stay deeply immersed in your creative flow.

To our wonderful alumni and future residents: as you may know, we recently implemented a nightly rate increase to help sustain and improve our historic property. Our goal is to always match those adjustments with direct enhancements to your stay. Expanding our dinner service to Saturdays is just the first step in ensuring your residency is as seamless, productive, and nurturing as possible.

We can't wait to welcome you back to the table. Tap on the link below to check out our updated rates, policies, and availability for your next creative retreat!

Our mission at The Writers' Colony is to be a sanctuary where writing is encouraged, shared, honored, and respected for all backgrounds. On Juneteenth, we are reminded that the fight for freedom has always been deeply intertwined with the fight for voice. For generations, Black writers, poets, and storytellers had to fight not just for their physical freedom, but for the right to hold a pen, tell their own stories, and have their humanity respected.

At WCDH, we believe that when we nurture diverse voices, we stimulate new ideas that push our whole society forward. Today, we honor the legacy of the Black writers who paved the way—including literary giants like Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou, whose creative spirits we honor daily in our dedicated suites on campus.

Who is a Black author or poet whose words have deeply impacted your life? Let us know in the comments.

The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow will host its June Poetluck on Thursday, June 18, 2026, featuring Fayetteville-based poet and educator Julia Paganelli Marín. The free, public event takes place at The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow, located at 515 Spring Street in Eureka Springs, beginning with a potluck meal at 6 p.m. followed by open mic readings at 6:30 p.m.

Julia Paganelli MarĂn is a writer and educator based in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and the creator of Bee Balm Arkansas, a community writing program in Northwest Arkansas founded in October 2022. They hold an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Arkansas and are the author of the chapbook Blush Less (Finishing Line Press, 2015). Their work has appeared in The Journal, Zone 3, Passages North, The Comstock Review, BOAAT Journal, and more.

Poetluck is a beloved community gathering that brings writers, readers, and literary enthusiasts together in a warm and welcoming environment. Guests are invited to bring a dish to share if they wish, though it is not required. Following the meal, writers of all genres and experience levels are welcome to participate in the open mic and share poetry, prose, or works-in-progress. Readings are kept to 3 to 5 minutes so everyone has a chance to take the floor.

“Poetluck reflects everything we love about the Colony, a place where writers and readers gather to share a meal, listen closely, and celebrate the written word in community,” said Angela Mateus, Executive Director of the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow. “We are honored to welcome Julia to the table this June.”

The event is free and open to the public. Those interested in staying overnight at the Colony may contact [email protected] to inquire about suite availability.

See you there!

For nearly three decades, WCDH has existed on belief as much as budget. The true cost of hosting one writer for one night at The Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow is approximately $170. Every stay, at every rate, has always been subsidized by people who believe that writers deserve a place like this, even when the math is hard.

Beginning June 15, 2026, our nightly residency rates will be updated to $123–$137 per night. It's a step toward sustainability and stability. Enough to keep the lights on, the kitchen warm, and the people who make it all possible closer to a living wage.

If you've ever donated to WCDH, you helped a writer finish something that mattered. Thank you!

If you've ever stayed here, you received more than you paid for by design, by labor of love, and by community. We got you!

We're grateful for every person who has made this place possible.

The deadline is closer than you think. 🕰️

June 30 is coming fast and somewhere out there is a writer sitting on a story about Southern food, culture, and memory that the world needs to hear.

If that writer is you, we want to hear from you!

The Flavors of the South Fellowship was created for the writer who has been waiting for the time, the space, and the support to finally do the work justice. Two weeks in a culinary sanctuary in the Ozark Mountains. A $1,500 stipend.

Southern food has always been about more than what's on the plate and the stories that prove it deserve to be written with intention, care, and the kind of focus that everyday life rarely allows.

This is your window. It closes June 30, 2026 at 11:59 PM CST.
