Our VR goggle vegan outreach at the Eugene Saturday Market was awesome! We had 12 people watch the videos, up from 9 last time. We had a lot of young people watching, including a very young girl (maybe 12?) watching with her Dad’s permission and she had no idea that bacon “came from” a pig. While watching the video she asked “why are they killing the pig?” and her Dad was honest and said, “That’s where our bacon and ham come from.”

We had another woman end the dairy cow video in tears and pretty shaken. Hope sat with her and told her that she had the same reaction to the VR experience 10 years ago (true story) and that’s why we are vegan so we know that we're not complacent or causing any harm. There are so many terrible things happening in the world, but this is one thing that we can actively do something about every day.

Such an FANTASTIC and rewarding experience. 🐓💜 This event was a collaboration between Eugene VeganFest, Compassionate Living, and Animal Compassion Eugene (ACE).

Volunteers with Compassionate Living, the Eugene VeganFest, and Animal Compassion Eugene showed VR video of the reality of animal farming at the Saturday Market in Eugene. We had 9 people watch the videos! They could choose between a virtual reality video of the chicken, pig, or cow dairy industry. All who participated were not vegan and two vegetarians watched the cow dairy video.

We also had some great conversations and connections with folks that didn't choose to watch the video, but wanted to chat. It was overall such a receptive and positive experience! We'll be doing it again in August, get in touch if you would like to help.

Thanks to Brent for providing the VR goggles, and Lindsey, Trish, and Zay for helping throughout the day.

Why should be care about bees? Why should we avoid honey and beeswax? Vegans want to eliminate as much harm, exploitation, and killing as possible. When animals are farmed for profit, there is always compromise of their wellbeing, and bees farmed for their honey and beeswax are no exception. Ethical veganism is about getting justice over the species barrier, and in this case it’s concern for the amazing, beautiful bee.

In this short episode, our host Hope Bohanec offers her knowledge about honey bees. We learn about their fascinating and complex lives, details of honey farming practices, and the truth about how our interference and manipulation of bees is hurting them and the entire planet.

Tapping into fandom with animal protection and vegan messages, The Protego Foundation accesses sci-fi, fantasy, and other devoted fan communities to advocate for animals. Our guest is Brittany Drake, campaigns director for The Protego Foundation. Brittany talks about the foundation’s creative campaigns such as getting vegan butter beer offered at the Harry Potter theme parks, a Game of Thrones inspired campaign encouraging vendors at fan conventions not to use wild animals as props for photos, and their latest campaign around the release of the movie sequel, Wicked For Good.

Brittany and Hope go on to talk about the animal rights and vegan themes in numerous movies and television entertainment, unpacking the animal personhood vision of Wicked, the strong animal characters in The Wizard of Oz, disturbing animal eating parallels in Stargate Atlantis, and vegetarianism in Avatar: The Last Airbender. They also talk about how the use of fictional creatures and characters can garner an audience's imagination and empathy for animals.
