Mark your calendars for Wednesday June 3rd at 7pm!

The University of Oregon’s Filmlandia Screening Series presents a rare occasion: the 1929 silent film Ed’s Coed – the first feature film produced entirely by students anywhere in the country, filmed on this very campus – accompanied by a live score performed by Orchestra Next.

The score, composed and assembled by Brian McWhorter (Professor of Music at UO and Music Director of Orchestra Next) in 2012, draws on Oregon-rooted songs excavated from UO Libraries’ historic sheet music collections. The program weaves together early twentieth-century songs – among them “She’s Sleeping ‘Neath Oregon’s Tall Pines,” “In the Moonlight with the Girl You Love,” and the classic “Logger Lover” – with McWhorter’s original compositions and other music from King Oliver to Henry Cowell, resulting in 75 minutes of continuous, wall-to-wall music. The “Oregon Pledge Song” even makes an appearance, adapted for the period.

Join Cinema Studies for a talk with Brian McWhorter, UO Professor of Music and Director of Orchestra Next. He’ll share his process for composing a score for Ed’s Coed (1929), the first feature film produced by students in the US and filmed at UO. The musical score features early twentieth-century songs and McWhorter’s original compositions.

This 25-26 season was incredible!

⭐️ we made some great music with over 40 musician fellows
⭐️ we were able to perform with two incredible Eugene arts organizations
⭐️ we were able to continue to foster a community that support the arts and live performance!

We have some very exciting projects in the works, and an incredible 26-27 season to look forward too!
