Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides

Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides NCAP is the leading Northwest voice for non-toxic pest and w**d solutions.

Healthy People and Communities: NCAP eliminates pesticide use in urban areas in order to protect people and communities from toxic exposure. Special emphasis is placed on ensuring that children and families have safe environments at home, and in areas such as schools and parks. Healthy Food and Farms: NCAP promotes organic and sustainable food production through strengthening and supporting resear

ch, demonstration, and training systems that seek ecological solutions to agricultural pest problems. In doing so, we collaborate with farmers, researchers, universities, food and farm advocates, policy makers, other non-profit organizations, and progressive, green-minded companies. Healthy Water and Wildlife: NCAP uses litigation to hold federal agencies accountable to protecting northwest waterways and endangered species, particularly salmon and steelhead, from harm caused by pesticide pollution.

Our new ‘Comadres Rurales’ group in rural eastern Oregon, has had several successful sessions since we launched this women's group in December. Driven by a commitment to community-based learning, NCAP, our group volunteers, and external community leaders provide various health and wellness training programs to attendees, and connect them with the resources needed in their community.

Recent session topics have included education regarding water safety awareness and nitrate levels in drinking water, basic gardening concepts and pesticide alternatives, illness prevention, and more.

The HWW Program works to protect Northwest ecosystems by reducing community reliance on harmful pesticides. We bridge the gap between scientific advocacy and local action to safeguard water quality and support salmon and orca recovery. Our current work is centered in Western Washington, where we work with residents, municipal managers, and the professional landscaping workforce to protect local watersheds and shared waterways.

The HWW Program Manager provides on-the-ground leadership for the program’s project development and implementation. This role focuses on engaging and organizing communities across Western Washington from the Puget Sound to the Columbia River basin. A key priority for this position is to position NCAP for continued growth by identifying new project opportunities and securing regional funding to expand our impact in the region.

April is Native Plant Appreciation Month in Oregon! This month we will be recapping some native plant projects NCAP has worked on as a way to celebrate.

We are starting with the Fort Hall Native Plant Project, shown in the photos above. In September 2024, NCAP's Healthy Food and Farm team spent two days at the Shoshone-Bannock Fort Hall Indian Reservation with the tribal community to plant young Pinyon Pine (Pinus monophylla) trees. The Pinyon Project started over two years prior through the partnership that NCAP has with the Sho-Ban Tribes, where NCAP supports tribally-led efforts to increase access to culturally-relevant foods in ecologically responsible ways.

Photo 1: Choice Vaughn holding previously burnt plant material that had mycelium. Choice regularly plants native habitat for conservation and demonstrated how to plant the Pinyon and water them with his home-made, salmon-based fertilizer. The mycelium was added to the fish fertilizer.

Stay tuned for more native plant recaps this month!

Happy Oregon Native Plant Appreciation Month from everyone at NCAP! In 2025, the Oregon Legislature passed SB 547 making April Native Plant Appreciation Month in Oregon. We are celebrating by sharing some region specific guides for choosing and planting native plants that are free from pesticides and right for your area! This includes a guide for the Willamette Valley, a guide for Idaho, and a neonicotinoid-free list of plant nurseries in Oregon and Washington.

Additionally, we want to point you in the direction of Native Plant Society of Oregon, an organization dedicated to native plant and habitat conservation. They have even more info about native plants, conservation efforts, events, gardening information and more! We are so glad to have a community partner like NPSO that supported and led this push for legislation recognizing the value of our native flora. Visit their page or website to learn more.

You can read the full blog post with links to all of these resources at the link below. Happy planting 🌱🙂

"For me, it was inspiring to see how long people had been fighting for a more ecologically-sound system of agriculture here. How they worked with skill, intelligence, and care to build a bubble of sustainability in the harsh environment of Idaho."

Ben Trieu recaps the Grower's Own Organic Farming Conference hosted by NCAP last month in Idaho. You can read the full article on our blog, including a breakdown of the workshops and activities throughout the day and the people and organizations who made it possible!

The 2025 NCAP Impact Report is here! In 2025 we stayed busy helping communities across the Northwest. We were able to reach thousands of people with free resources on pesticide safety, exposure and prevention, provide trainings and workshops for growers, gardeners, and landscapers, install multiple pollinator habitat sites, restore traditional Native food populations in the Camas Prairie, distribute information on invasive species prevention, help folks get their water tested for dangerous levels of nitrates, produce 26 radio show episodes with 13,000 viewers, and so much more!

We couldn’t have done any if this without your support. Thank you for making 2025 an impactful year!

We condemn the sickening acts being perpetrated by ICE and applaud those resisting. We also ask our supporters to join the general strike happening today, Friday, Jan 30th. If you cannot take off work or school, please help send a strong message by not spending money!

The above excerpts were pulled from an NCAP article written in 2020. It is disheartening how relevant it is now, but we hope it will deepen our understanding of the broad impact of chemicals in our communities and motivate you to join the pesticide-free movement.
