The initial assessment suggests that the many years of forest treatments worked, said Pete Caligiuri, Oregon forest program director for The Nature Conservancy, which runs the research at the preserve.

"Generally speaking, what firefighters were reporting on the ground is that when the fire came into those areas that had been thinned ... it had significantly less impact."

Firefighters said, because of years of forest management, flames stayed closer to the ground, where they were easier to fight, moved more slowly and did less damage to the overall forest.

HB 762 and HB 2571 have both passed! 🎉

HB 762 is the Omnibus fire bill, which included initiating rulemaking on a Certified Burn Manager program and cross-boundary burns. It also contains many other things related to wildfire response and mitigation.

HB 2571 calls for a study of prescribed fire liability, insurance, and standard of care, tasking it to the Department of Consumer and Business Services, in consultation with OPFC among others. This report will be delivered to the Legislature to inform future direction around these issues.

“The kind of conditions we had this morning,” says Ken Gregor, Mazama Zone Fire Management Officer, “increased fire behavior to a point where we needed to go into more of an operational suppression mode to try and curtail it quickly. To do that, we had to declare it a wildfire which allows us to bring in larger aircraft and other resources to help, like hand crews, dozers, and engines.” The fire is still inside of the planned prescription area, Gregor says, but it was important to be proactive quickly to keep it inside the parameters.

CHILOQUIN, Ore. – Drier conditions, lower humidity, and increased fire behavior forced the Chiloquin Ranger District of the Fremont-Winema National Forest, to convert the North 2 prescribed fire, which began yesterday, into a wildfire called the Meadow Fire.
