Janet Smith Graduate Student Co-op

Janet Smith Graduate Student Co-op The Janet Smith Co-Op house includes up to 17 mainly graduate students and non-traditional undergrads.

We are focused on providing a safer space for students of color, international students, gender non-conforming, and LGTBQIA+ students to thrive. The Janet Smith Student Cooperative caters to graduate students from across the country and around the globe. Purchased by the SCA in 1981, the house holds up to 18 members in single rooms. Its namesake, Janet Smith, was a University of Oregon employment secretary who helped open Eugene's first women's co-op in the 1930s.

The Students' Cooperative Association is a collection of 3 non-profit student housing cooperatives in Eugene, Oregon. We provide affordable housing for low-income and marginalized students in Lane county.

With the onset of the corona virus pandemic, many of our members have unfortunately lost or seen a significant decrease in their source of income. Collective living has been difficult to navigate in these times in many ways, and Spring, usually one of our busiest times of the year for applications and new member move-ins, has been very quiet. This just so happens to coincide with several large planned maintenance projects that now are in limbo as we scramble to adjust our budgets. These maintenance projects are time-sensitive and cannot be put off for long.

We are in need of help covering some of our base operating costs so we can continue providing much-needed affordable housing when this is over.

A little piece of local Eugene history

Into the mid-1960s, hotels and restaurants in Eugene refused to serve People of Color, including famous Black performers like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Nat King Cole. Instead, these and other performers were hosted by the Mims (whose house is pictured here) and the Washingtons, two local Black families. The Mims also housed Black UO athletic recruits who were not permitted to stay on campus during their visits. Today, the Mims House is still owned by the Mims family, and leased by the NAACP Eugene Springfield Oregon Unit 1119.

The Janet Smith has a long and proud history of supporting the GTFF. We are so proud of Ricardo Friaz and their endeavors to provide a space for graduate students of color!

PS: We LOVE the references to Peter the Cat, a former JS resident, and our Janet Smith influence of the caucus' meeting norms.

A new committee in the University of Oregon’s graduate-employee labor union seeks to make space for students of color.
