Hola Raza,
The 14th annual Raza Unida Youth Conference hosted by MEChA is coming up Friday February 2nd and help is much needed and appreciated.
RUYC is an annual all-day event where Latinx high school students are invited from Lane County and other parts of the state to come to the UO campus and participate in a conference with keynote speakers, workshops, and a campus tour. It is an opportunity for local Latinx youth to gain information on how to access higher education, while also educating on various topics that affect our communities. One of our primary goals with RUYC is to empower youth and give them the necessary tools to access higher education while also giving them an introduction to important issues that are constantly affecting Latinx and other marginalized communities.
The motto of Raza Unida Youth Conference is Educación: El Derecho De La Raza! (Education: The Right of the People!). Based on the unfortunate events and political climate that has impacted our Latinx community this past year, the 2018 RUYC theme will be Floreciendo juntos (Flourishing Together). This is a reminder that no matter what struggles we face, as people of color, we will thrive.
This is UO MEChAs largest event! Volunteers are much needed to make sure the conference goes smooth. We are asking that volunteers can help for a minimum of two hours the day of the conference from 8AM-6PM. Tasks vary from set up, clean up, assisting with registration, chaperoning the dance and political action we have, and leading high schools students to the different workshop rooms that will be held in the EMU!
