A National Historic Cemetery & City of Eugene landmark, the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery was established in 1872 by the Spencer Butte Lodge No. 9 International Order of Oddfellows. The original cemetery was 10 acres with 6 acres added in 1907. There are over 767 lots on the 16 acres with about 4,000 burials. It is an historical repository of stories of the lives of early pioneers who chose this as the

final resting places for themselves and their families. Towering Douglas Fir trees, old roses, lavender, and white lilac bushes shade their graves. The Eugene Pioneer Cemetery is The Crown Jewel of the surrounding area.

Heritage roses are noted for their splendor and for the abundant fragrance produced by their blooms. Individual rose bushes in our cemetery date back 60, 80, or even 100 years. Preserving them is preserving history – one rose at a time! After decades and decades of benign neglect, the heritage roses in our cemetery are once again doing well thanks to EPCA Board Member Helen Liu, and several Master Gardeners and Pruning Specialists.

A Memorial Day Service was held at the Civil War Veteran’s Plot. Organized by Eugene American Legion Post #3, the formal ceremony featured members of the Sons of Union Veterans dressed in authentic Civil War military uniforms, and a Three-Volley “Black Powder Salute” in honor of the heroes who are at rest in the G.A.R. Plot. The inspiring Shasta Middle School Band and Choir performed.
