Located in the West Eugene Wetlands, home to hundreds of plants and animals and over 3,000 acres of wetlands and uplands, our education programs engage with a variety of schools and is designed to complement

existing school curricula by incorporating State Standards. This year, WREN has had the pleasure of interacting with writer and photographer Julia Boring as she worked on a story about the West Eugene Wetlands. This article, What Wetlands Could Be: Where Kids and Nature Convene, beautifully captures the vision of what WREN's programs hope to accomplish and the importance of these critical wetland wet prairie habitats.

Check out Julia's story linked in our bio or visit https://uosciencestory.org/archive/2026/wetlands/what-wetlands-could-be.

On Tuesday, WREN had our May Wetland Wander at a BLM wet prairie wetland site in West Eugene. Christine, a botanist with the BLM, led the walk and helped our group identify a number of native plants. 🌼 She also talked about the restoration goals and upcoming projects that will include the introduction of even more important wet prairie plant species.

Highlights: We were lucky enough to have some budding ecologists with us and it was awesome to see them explore and connect with the natural world. πŸπŸ” It's wonderful to be joined by lifelong learners of all ages! Another highlight was seeing a strong population of Kincaid's Lupine, the host plant for the Fender's Blue Butterfly. Check out picture #2 if you aren't familiar with this beautiful native flower! 😎

See you at the next Wetland Wander in June!

Over the last few weeks WREN has been busy with our Youth Land Stewards end-of-year field trips out in the West Eugene Wetlands. Students participating in the YLSEP program joined us for a full day in the field to learn from professionals working in conservation-focused careers and get hands-on experience practicing various skills at 4 different stations- Botany, Wildlife Biology, Nature Art, and Soil Science. We cannot thank our community volunteers enough! They took time out of their work and busy schedules to share their knowledge and expertise with the students. This program would not be possible without their generosity! THANK YOU volunteers! We also want to thank the wonderful teachers and students in the program and the field trip chaperones! πŸ’šπŸ™‚πŸ

Click through the photos to see highlights from our time with the students during their field trips. Also, stay tuned for more YLSEP 2025-26 wrap-up posts to see more great moments from throughout the year with these awesome students! 😎
