Remember January's Black Tie Bingo event? Team Oregon Build is using those funds now to construct homes for young people who currently lack housing. Jesse Quinn (pictured) sent the following update: “[The] units for Hosea Youth Services are nearing completion, and things have been moving quickly on the production side. I would love to see if we can identify a date and time that works well for a community service opportunity.”

Take note: you don’t have to be a Rotarian to volunteer on this project!

Usually when all four departments are together in one place,” quipped SPD chief George Crolly, "it’s a very bad day for someone.” In fact, it was a very good day for four officers who were recognized for their outstanding service as part of EDR's annual Dick Clark Memorial Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

From Lane County Sheriff’s Office, the honoree was Sergeant Travis Grace, and he was presented by Sheriff Carl “Landslide” Wilkerson (so-named because he was running unopposed in the recent election).

From Springfield Police Department, the honoree was Detective Brandon Sink, and he was presented by Deputy Chief George Crolly

From the Oregon State Police, the honoree was: Trooper Jobin Jarvis, who has received a large number of plaudits from citizens he’s helped, and has also excelled in getting large numbers of intoxicated drivers off the road. He was presented by Lieutenant Christopher Phillips.

From the Eugene Police Department, the honoree was Officer Jose Alvarez, who was praised for de-escalating suicidal individuals to stabilize them and keep them from harm. He also earned immense appreciation for his thoughtful care of a 7-year-old child who came to the station in connection with a severe mauling by a dog. He was presented by EPD Chief Chris Skinner

Rotary International Founder, Paul Harris was a good friend of first leader of the Boy Scouts of America, James E. West. In fact, they traveled the country together in the 1910s, establishing Boy Scout councils across all continental states. They became close professional collaborators in the early years of both organizations. Because of this special relationship between Rotary and the Boy Scouts, countless young men across the nation enjoy the benefits of Scouting as a stepping-stone for a life of Service Above Self. The connection continues today in the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians.

Postcard from Taiwan: This! Deltarian Pam Logan recently arrived in Taipei to reprise her 35-year tradition of biking around the wilds of Asia. Six days, 330 miles, starting in Kaohsiung. But she won’t be solo; she’s joining 60 others in a quest to further Rotary’s goal of ending polio. Anyone care to pledge their support? 🚴🚴🚴

We’re looking forward to welcoming Veterans Legacy on June 5 at 12:00pm. Attendees will hear about the organization’s mission to support veterans experiencing PTSD, substance abuse, and associated traumas through community-based healing and extended care.

The session will also feature insights from Dr. John LeBow, President of the Veterans Legacy board and a family physician who has served the Eugene/Springfield community for more than 25 years. We hope you’ll join us for this important conversation.

Liam F. is Delta Rotary’s honoree for Sheldon High School student of the month for April. His presentation to the club made it clear why his teachers consider him outstanding: a Spanish immersion student, he carries a 4.25 GPA even while playing two sports, volunteering at his church, and working part time. He also has a passion for music and worked with friends on an album. But he’s not relying on music for his future career: instead, he plans to study cybersecurity and then become an Air Force officer. We will all be safer with such a hardworking, serious young man protecting us.
