Blues in the Schools

Blues in the Schools Blues in the Schools in Eugene, Oregon, is a program of the Rainy Day Blues Society and offers free music programs to Lane County schools.

We teach kids about harmonica, musical expression, rhythm, rock 'n' roll roots, singing, songwriting, and more!

Rainy Day Blues Society didn't bring the blues to Coburg Community Charter School yesterday, we brought an *understanding* of the blues. After interactive classroom workshops, this clip shows 30 seconds of our concert finale. Not shown is a young girl who teachers said was the "shyest" student in school. Yet she got up in front of the school to sing what she wrote in songwriting class with a booming voice from the bottom of her soul. Blew everyone away. The power of music.

"What's this weird thing called Boogie-Woogie?" we asked in our Juke Joint Jump workshop last week at an elementary school.

Some of the serious answers from kids:

1. A Star Wars dance that wookies do (thought we said boogie-wookie)
2. Something surfers do (like boogie boarding)
3. The boogie man

Kicking off our fifth full year of Blues in the Schools programs for Lane County, Oregon. Last year, we provided programs for 4,500+ kids. Integral to our program is this fabulous comic book about the blues from Blues Comix. http://www.bluescomix.com

During a recent program at a kindergarten, we demonstrated a popular folk song the regular way versus a bluesy version and asked the kids what difference they could perceive. One girl's reply: the blues one is "beatier." (lol — more beats in it)

Middle school music students at Kennedy in Eugene, Oregon got their mojo working with the Blues in the Schools musicians today. A number of them plan to attend tomorrow's BluesOut! Under 21 Blues Jam run by the Rainy Day Blues Society. Also, listen for a shout-out to the school on tomorrow's KRVM's Breakfast With The Blues. How's that for building community?

Thanks to our partnership with KRVM's Breakfast with the Blues, our Blues in the Schools students get an on-air shout-out after we visit. When we told them that recently at Territorial Elementary, one boy shouted: "We're going viral?!!"

We asked students what they thought Boogie Woogie is during the Rainy Day Blues Society's Blues in the Schools program this week. A couple of the answers: "Something having to to do with snot?" and "A scary kind of dancing." Don't worry, we set them straight, courtesy of Memphis Slim!

The Rainy Day Blues Society's Blues in the Schools program went to Prairie Mountain School yesterday. After two hours of in-classroom workshops, kids learned about the Boss Man at the final concert, courtesy of our Super Band: Vicki Stevens, Roger Mcconnell, Peter Giri Paul Biondi, Hank Shreve, and Solomon.

See some of our musicians in action in this photo story put together by Walterville School in Springfield. In the harmonica class, we told the kids that the high notes (8, 9, 10) are best blown on Sat. and Sun. mornings next to your parents' beds — but you didn't hear that from us! A 5th grader came up after and said "I'm going to say you told us. I need an alibi!"
