Over time, we notice the same emotions returning repeatedly. We may even sense how our emotions solidify into personality traits, worldviews, and identities. This gives us the foundation to broaden our view.

For example, we might notice fear in a moment, but realize it's just one emotion in a larger pattern of social anxiety, which also includes shame, jealousy, sadness, and more. By recognizing the pattern, and applying compassion, we gain access to more expansive healing.

The largest pattern is our sense of self itself, subtly shifting over the years. We can say, "I'll support you no matter what, always" to our entire self and address all the times in the past we have felt isolated and abandoned. Then, we can let that self relax into the greater presence that it came from.

The skill to adjust our aperture comes with time, as does the ever-deepening understanding of our patterns and willingness to set them down.

The three healing emotions are curiosity, gratitude, and compassion - and all their variations.

Curiosity is an essential companion for healing and insight, for in its gentle spirit of exploration, it keeps us engaged and reveals what is hidden. In this way, it is the antidote to distraction, dismissiveness, or habitual preconceptions - especially in response to experiences that are neutral or unstimulating. It courageously draws forth hidden wisdom and sometimes hidden pain from the ordinary and mundane. Encountering an emotion, we can inquire what is this? or who are you?

While curiosity opens us, gratitude establishes a transformative intimacy. Embodying a warm appreciation, we consecrate a connection to an aspect of ourselves. In healing, this creates a fellowship with our pain that encourages inner trust and relaxation as well as an appreciation for ourselves just as we are. Gratitude is the medicine of choice for protective emotions that often block or constrict, as these emotions have been working ceaselessly to try to help us and need our acknowledgment.

While curiosity and gratitude are critical to revealing and establishing intimacy with our pain, compassion is the force that alchemizes it. It's the one emotion that is designed to hold pain, and the surest path to inner safety. This safety is what allows our protective patterns to release and transform. It's what allows our wounds to relax and heal, and our hearts open to deeper spiritual truths.

The healing emotions then unlock the liberating emotions of wonder, playfulness, joy, and equanimity. All the wholesome emotions support each other in the never-ending expansion of our heart.

1) Allowance. The first wise approach to our emotional lives aligns with the traditional insight meditation instruction around working with feelings. We simply bring mindfulness to the feeling of pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral emotions to break the chain of unconscious proliferation.
2) Cultivation. The second approach is direct cultivation of the wholesome. Most simply, we embrace pleasant emotions when they arise in our lives, which deepens their resonance in us. In addition, we can use internally-spoken phrases or visualizations to evoke the wholesome and dwell in it, creating new neural pathways.
3) Application. The third is the core of the Dharma of Healing, applying wholesome emotions to unwholesome emotions for transformation. We apply compassion, for example, to pain, thereby cultivating the wholesome while transforming pain into its liberated expression. This is the same as applying connection to separation.
4) Surrender. The fourth and final is letting go. When we willingly surrender in the face of emotions (especially after practicing the previous three), something miraculous can happen. The wholesome emotions arise within us spontaneously because they are natural expression of a connected heart.

These approaches are not in conflict or competition. They need each other and can act as a progressive training. In turn, we enjoy a positive feedback loop. The more we cultivate, the more deeply we heal; the more we heal, the more we surrender and wholesome emotions emerge naturally. This allows us to heal even deeper and the cycle continues.
