On Tuesday, August 18, 5–7 pm, at Gratitude Brewing (540 E 8th Ave, Eugene), join our monthly BEST Happy Hour, happening each third Tuesday of the month. BEST Happy Hour is a place to meet up with others in our community and talk about all things transportation in the company of local experts and guest speakers.

This month, hear from special guests from the City of Eugene and The University of Oregon Transportation and Livability Student Group (LiveMove) speaking on the Patterson Street Safety Pilot. BEST Policy Coordinator Peter Simmeth will lead a discussion with LiveMove’s Bella Ebner and Hannah Norris and City of Eugene’s Reed Dunbar about how the community moved from recent tragedies to the proposed Erick Njue Connector to the Patterson Street Safety Pilot now underway.

Our hosts at Gratitude Brewing (540 E 8th Ave, Eugene) invite you to show up before BEST Happy Hour for $1 off all pints of Gratitude beer, local wine, ciders, and kombucha from 3 to 5 pm! The venue also includes many nonalcoholic options and delicious food from their scratch kitchen with bread from Reality Kitchen.

This Wednesday, August 12th from 6pm-7pm at the Spencer View Apartments Community Room (2250 Patterson Street), learn about the Patterson Street Pilot Project. City of Eugene staff will give a presentation beginning at 6:00pm, followed by time for community members to share questions or concerns.

Join the City of Eugene for the Patterson Street Pilot Project Community Meeting on Wednesday, August 12th from 6pm-7pm at the Spencer View Apartments Community Room (2250 Patterson Street).

The City of Eugene will be testing a new lane configuration on Patterson Street later this year to improve safety as part of the citywide Vision Zero effort. The number of southbound travel lanes will be reduced from two lanes to one lane from 19th Avenue to 24th Avenue. Removing the western travel lane provides space to add on-street parking and a bicycle lane.

This change responds to a fatal crash that occurred on Patterson Street at 22nd Avenue in January 2026. The pilot project will eliminate the crash type that can occur when a pedestrian enters a street with two lanes that travel in the same direction and is struck by a vehicle in the second lane when the first lane stops and the second lane does not.

City staff will give a presentation beginning at 6:00pm, followed by time for community members to share questions or concerns.

The Register-Guard reports:
• Electric vehicle startup Arcimoto has sold its remaining assets to Volara Motorsports Group.
• Volara will launch an E-Garage Service Network to service electric mobility devices, starting in Eugene.
• The new network will provide service and parts for owners of vehicles from defunct companies, including Arcimoto.

Last fall, a supermajority of Oregon lawmakers approved gas and other tax increases they said were needed to maintain our transportation system. But last May, the large majority of voters rejected those tax increases.

Now unsurprisingly, officials are saying that cuts will be needed. If so, those cuts will be made unevenly, hitting basic services hard while not touching mega projects.

Is the issue not having enough money? Or is it how the money we have has been allocated? Unfortunately, previously approved by both major political parties, those mega projects cannot be easily canceled or shrunk but rather continue to suck up funding as costs escalate faster than inflation.

The state faces fewer road crews and longer DMV lines unless lawmakers act.
