GrassRoots Garden

GrassRoots Garden GrassRoots Garden is a partnership between FOOD for Lane County, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, OSU/ Lane County Extension and a caring community.

GrassRoots Garden is a 2.5-acre garden coordinated by FOOD for Lane County that includes a City of Eugene compost demonstration site, Master Gardener workshops and demonstrations, opportunities for everyone to help, learn and grow, and an outdoor kitchen. One of two FOOD for Lane County Gardens, GrassRoots annually grows between 55,000 and 70,000 pounds of food, while teaching usually about 2,500

individuals who spend about 25,000 hours with us. From preschool homeschoolers through retirees, from special needs youth and adults, court ordered individuals, and those just wanting to give and learn -- we all learn by doing. Our objectives at GrassRoots are:
We grow food for ourselves and others in need in the community. We teach people how to grow food
We teach them how to teach others to grow food
With our outdoor kitchen, we teach people how to cook, eat and
appreciate the food of the garden. We teach people how to work together and to get along which is
hope for the future. We accomplish so much more together than we do alone. Drop-In Volunteer Hours:
(November-April) Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9am – 4pm
(May-October) Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, 9am - 4pm

Crimp and smother technique! We’re experimenting with a no till method to incorporate our beautiful stand of cover top into our planting beds. Using a board with angle iron bottom and long string handles, our volunteers moved their way through the cover crop field, crimping it as they went. Afterward, they laid a thick mulch of leaves to smother the cover crop. In a few weeks, we’ll part the mulch and see if the cover crop is sufficiently decomposed to be able to prepare the beds for planting.
