Two crews, one big first-week project! Yellow and Blue Crews (YA 12 and YA 15) partnered with John Day Fossil Beds National Monument to improve the Blue Basin Trail.

The crews removed material deposited by a slide, took out a damaged wooden boardwalk, reused fill to repair eroded sections of trail, installed water bars to improve drainage, and began laying out a new trail route where the boardwalk previously stood.

It was a strong start to the summer and a great example of what crews can accomplish when they work together!

Today, we’re celebrating National Service and Conservation Corps Day, and tomorrow, our Youth Camping crews launch into the field!

For more than four decades, Northwest Youth Corps has seen the power of national service in action. Corpsmembers build trails, restore habitats, reduce wildfire risk, support communities, and gain hands-on skills that can shape their futures.

As our next round of youth crews prepares to begin their season, we’re proud to be part of a nationwide movement of Conservation Corps creating stronger communities, healthier public lands, and brighter futures for young people.

Happy National Service and Conservation Corps Day! 🌲

Meet Jade, one of NYC’s Natural Resource Management Individual Placements serving with the National Park Service at Craters of the Moon NPS!

As part of Cave Assessment and Mapping training, Jade crawled through a small passage in an unexplored cave to survey for signs of bat life. Her wildlife-focused internship supports important natural resource work while giving her hands-on experience in field research, cave assessment, and habitat monitoring.

Way to go, Jade!

Happy National Trails Day!

Every year, Northwest Youth Corps crews help care for the trails, public lands, and outdoor spaces that connect communities across the Northwest.

Last year, our crews and interns built or improved 4,254 miles of trail, built or improved 695 trail structures, bucked 1,315 logs off trails, improved 272 campsites, and removed 4,607 acres of noxious weeds.

These numbers represent more than 200,000 hours of hard work from nearly 1,000 youth and young adults gaining hands-on conservation experience while making public lands safer, healthier, and more accessible for everyone.

Thank you to our crews, field staff, project partners, and supporters who make this work possible. Celebrate National Trails Day by getting outside, enjoying a trail near you, and appreciating the efforts that keep these places open for all.

For 42 summers, Northwest Youth Corps crews have headed into the field to care for public lands, strengthen communities, and build skills that last long after the season ends.

This week, our summer session begins with the launch of our Young Adult Conservation Camping Crews. Tomorrow, these crews head into the field for a season of hands-on conservation work across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.

Every season is made possible by the partners, donors, families, alumni, and supporting members who believe in the power of meaningful conservation service.

Here’s to another summer of young people stepping into the field, building confidence, and creating an impact across the Northwest.

Meet Cooper, one of NYC’s Preventative Search and Rescue Individual Placements serving with the National Park Service at Craters of the Moon NPS!

Cooper’s internship focuses on helping prevent search and rescue incidents before they happen. His work includes patrolling park resources such as trails, campgrounds, and wilderness areas while educating visitors about how to stay safe during their visit.

Preventative Search and Rescue interns play an important role in protecting both visitors and park resources.

Great work, Cooper!
