We exist to serve the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo through child sponsorship, agricultural and livestock development, and economic empowerment through the love of Jesus Christ. The City of Refuge International Inc.'s primary purpose shall be to directly serve the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo (D.R.C) through the love of Christ by:

♻️ One week until our next can and bottle collection!
The City of Refuge International (CORI) supports some of the most impoverished children and families in the Democratic Republic of Congo through food, education, healthcare, water access, clothing, and more.

Our can and bottle collection program helps provide children with the basic things many of us take for granted, including meals, access to medicine, the chance to attend school, and more.
The next time you have cans or bottles to return, we hope you’ll consider donating them to CORI next Sunday.

A new school year means a fresh start, but too many children still lack the books and supplies they need to learn.

At The City of Refuge International, we helped children get ready for school with books, school supplies, and the tools they need to learn and grow. However, the need is greater than the supplies we currently have available, and we want to reach more children so they can keep learning.

Your gift helps us purchase additional school supplies so more children can walk into the classroom prepared and ready to learn.

Behind every face is a story, a family, and a future worth investing in.

Right now, 60% of children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are left legally unregistered, meaning they are invisible to the system. Without a birth certificate, these children are often restricted from basic healthcare, schooling, and essential protections. Yet, in the face of these immense challenges, mothers and families are working tirelessly to secure a future for their children.

The City of Refuge International (CORI) walks alongside families in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with food, education, healthcare, clean water, and more, so every child has a chance to dream.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re reminded that poverty affects more than a person’s physical well-being. The daily burdens of hunger, instability, and trauma can weigh heavily on the heart and mind.

We believe caring for those in need means answering the call to serve our neighbors with love, dignity, and faith through our actions. Through our work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, The City of Refuge International (CORI) serves vulnerable communities with compassion and hope.

Meet Officer Chris Waggoner, the new face of CORI's Can & Bottle Collection Program. 🙌🧡

Chris spends his days keeping students and staff safe as a patrol and security officer at the University of Oregon. At home, he and his wife Jamie are raising three kids. And somehow, in the in-between moments, he has been quietly showing up for families halfway across the world.

For years, Chris has volunteered with City of Refuge International (CORI), a humanitarian aid organization right here in Springfield, Oregon, that serves families living in extreme poverty in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Now he is stepping up to lead the program that makes it all possible: CORI's Can & Bottle Collection.

The idea is simple. Instead of tossing your bottles and cans, you donate them. CORI redeems them. And the money goes directly toward feeding and educating children facing hunger and conflict in Congo. Through this program, thousands of dollars have already been raised, and every single one started with someone choosing not to throw a can away.

When asked what keeps him going, Chris said it simply:
"I believe our efforts help keep children facing hunger and extreme poverty alive who otherwise may not survive."
And when asked where that heart for others comes from:
"My dad and my faith in Christ taught me the importance of thinking beyond myself by serving others."

Some of the women who walked into CORI's sewing program had never touched a sewing machine before.

Now they are running their own small businesses. Sewing full outfits. Teaching what they know to the next woman who walks through the door.

Vocational training is not just job training. It represents economic independence for those who already carry more than their fair share.

15.4 million children in the DRC are currently in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in a country that is home to 98 million people.

More than half the population of the DRC is under 18. This crisis is a children's crisis.

CORI works in Kamina, a city far from the headlines. With long-term and ground-level care for orphans, vulnerable children, and families, we help children chase the future they deserve.

CORI's Community Farming Program gives them access to seeds, tools, and training so what grows on this land feeds more than just today.

For nearly a decade, Dean Stephens and Peggy have faithfully served alongside CORI by helping collect bottles and cans for the bottle deposit program. They generously brought their own truck, helped tow the trailer, and delivered countless loads over the years. Their family even traveled in from across the country to help support CORI's mission.

Their dedication, kindness, and servant hearts have made a lasting impact on thousands of children served by CORI. Dean and Peggy are truly an integral part of the CORI family, and we cannot thank them enough for their years of unwavering support. While they have retired from CORI’s bottle program, thanks to their diligence for so many years, it will be continued by Officer Chris Waggoner.
