EPF Turned Opportunity on Moon Mountain into Parkland!

When 30 prime acres on Moon Mountain hit the private market a few months ago, the clock started ticking. A property like this could easily have ended up locked away in private hands, sitting idle for decades.

But because the Eugene Parks Foundation maintains a nimble, ready-to-act Land Fund, we didn't have to wait on the sidelines. With support from our passionate community of investors, EPF stepped in immediately to purchase the parcel, which we call, Soggy Bottom.

True to our mission, we then donated the land directly to the City of Eugene—integrating it into the public domain where it belongs.

Today, this parcel, colored in Beige, aka Soggy Bottom, is locked in as part of the unified master vision for the entire Black Oak Basin, Moon Mountain, and Coryell Ridge area.

Passing the Torch - EPF Announces Board Leadership Transition

We are proud to share a planned transition in our Board leadership. Planned succession and strong governance are core values at EPF, ensuring your investments in Eugene’s outdoors remain secure, resilient, and focused on long-term impact.

After four years of transformative growth as Board Chair, Claire Syrett is stepping down from her leadership role. She will continue serving on the Board as a Director, applying her deep knowledge of municipal government to strengthen EPF’s vital partnership with the City of Eugene.

We are excited to announce our new executive leadership team for the next two years:

Kevin Alltucker (formerly Vice Chair) steps into the role of Board President.

Ness Zolan (Senior Director of Economic Development at Onward Eugene) joins as Vice President.

"Claire’s leadership laid a powerful foundation for EPF," said incoming President Kevin Alltucker. "Thoughtful leadership transitions keep our organization strong. Together with Ness, Claire, and our whole board, we look forward to building on this momentum and expanding outdoor access across Eugene."

The Service Family Foundation has awarded the Eugene Parks Foundation $135,000 to help build the Suzanne Arlie Mountain Bike Park!

This grant is a major step toward creating a fun, welcoming spot where local kids, families, and riders of all levels can get outside and enjoy the trails.

"The Eugene Parks Foundation has helped better the lives of Lane County residents for decades, and the Suzanne Arlie Mountain Bike Park is just another example of that great work," said Bill Service of The Service Family Foundation.

"These trails will enrich lives for generations to come, unlock unknown corners of Eugene, and give our neighbors a new way to stay active in the city we love. The Service Family Foundation is honored to help make this community dream a reality."

Parks and Open Space, in collaboration with the Eugene Parks Foundation, is pleased to invite the community to the official grand opening celebration of the South Eugene Meadows Trail at the newly developed parking area (5200 S Willamette St, Eugene, OR) on September 22, 2026, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Eugene Mayor Kaarin, Eugene Parks Foundation Board President Kevin Alltucker, and Parks & Open Space, City of Eugene Government Director Craig Carnagey will share opening remarks, followed by a ribbon-cutting and light refreshments. A celebratory “hike the loop” walk for those interested will depart from the trailhead around 10:30 a.m.

South Eugene Meadows Park is located south and west of the Eugene city limits. The South Eugene Meadows Trail includes a shared-use (hiker/biker) trail that forms a 3.8-mile "lollipop loop," when approached from the new trailhead parking area. This 194-acre natural area includes a beautiful mixture of oak woodlands, open prairie, and Douglas-fir forest.

The park property is covered by a Conservation Easement administered by OWEB and BPA, in recognition of the important habitats on the site, and the Easement restricts the use of "motorized vehicles" on the property - meaning that electric assist on bicycles must be turned off within the park.

This $1.5 million project was made possible through the generous support of the Eugene Parks Foundation, which raised $665,000 for the construction of the trail.

This project also received funding from System Development Charges. The 2023 Parks and Recreation Levy funds ongoing care and maintenance of the entire park.

The property was purchased in 2012 with funding assistance from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, wildlife mitigation funds from the Bonneville Power Administration, and a generous contribution from the landowner.
