Hey yall. Please join us September 15 for our regular meeting and a special celebration of LCBA’s 50 years serving Lane County. Our meeting will NOT be at the grange but at the Art House in Eugene. We will have long-time member Dewey Caron presenting on overwintering and a special short doc on the club. Doors at 6 and meeting at 6:30. We will also be honoring some long time members. Free and open to all. We will also have our new patches, hoodies and tees available for purchase if you want to rep LCBA.

Join us this Tuesday at the Irving Grange for our August meeting. Doors at 6:15 and we get to business at 6:30. This month we have Tom Cinquini Tom Cinquini who owns and operates Sowers Apiaries and is President of OSBA talking about how to read brood frames and make decisions about the overall hive quickly. We also have Dr. Priya Chakrabarti Basu from Washington State University Department of Entomology joining via zoom to talk about honeybee nutrition. The meeting is free and open to all. Just to note, our September meeting will be held at Art House to celebrate our 50 year anniversary with Dewey Caron and a screening of a short documentary on the club plus some other great things. It’s that time of year (and has been for a few weeks) for honey extraction and we just dropped a new extraction tutorial on our YouTube Channel. For most of us who have never done this, extraction is super exciting but it may feel daunting and confusing. So, we had Andre Sirois break down the basics of this in Honey Extraction 101 (filmed and edited by Daylan Petersen-Duran). Please add your ideas and what you do in the comments section.

We cover where to extract, what you need, how to uncap with the fork, extracting with a radial or tangential hand crank or motorized extractor, straining, removing foam, bottling and cleanup and storage. This is all aimed at basic concepts with basic tools. This is a longer tutorial so we built in chapters to navigate (in the info section) and will add some links to various tools used here. Hopefully this is helpful. Our next tutorial will be on feeding, which you may want to consider soon if your bees aren’t up to weight. Happy extraction yall!!!
