Happy October! We have cooler nights, but still some beatiful warm sunny days this week. Get outside and enjoy!

The first hard frost is a few weeks out, and most of what October asks for is a deadline, not a chore.

🍂 Before the frost:

- Harvest squash and pumpkins once a thumbnail won't dent the skin, then leave them in the sun a week — they keep for months that way
- Plant garlic, pointy end up. It needs a winter in the ground to split into cloves
- Get tulips, daffodils, and crocus in at three times their own depth — deeper than feels right is right
- Lift dahlia tubers once frost blackens the tops; store them dry, cool, and dark
- Scrub birdhouses, feeders, and baths before the winter crowd shows up
- Bring pots in and drain the hose — a full hose is the one that splits

The leaves stay where they fall. Next June's moths and fireflies are already in them.

Then sit down with something warm. The garden's got the rest. ☕

This week several of our members cooked dinner at the Ronald McDonald House: Springfield at the PeaceHealth Heartfelt House. Our Grange provides dinner for their guests once a quarter, and it's one of our favorite service projects.
