Just a reminder of a day in Irish history.

📜 On this day - 24th April 1916 🇮🇪

The Easter Rising began in Dublin, marking a decisive moment in modern Irish history.

Irish Volunteers and members of the Irish Citizen Army took key positions across the city, including the General Post Office. From its steps, Patrick Pearse read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, declaring Ireland an independent republic.

The Rising lasted six days before being suppressed. Its immediate impact was limited, but the executions that followed, including Pearse and James Connolly, shifted public opinion.

In time, it became a defining event on the path to Irish independence.

We recently acquired this Daily Mail press photograph of Countess Constance Markievicz following her release from prison in 1919.

The caption on the reverse reads:
“Countess Markievicz welcomed back to Dublin. Countess Markievicz, the Sinn Féin leader, who was released from prison last week, returned to Dublin on Saturday, March 15th, and was enthusiastically received by her supporters. Our photo shows the Countess holding a bouquet tied with the Sinn Féin colours, presented to her on arrival.”

During her imprisonment, Markievicz made history as the first woman elected to the British Parliament. In line with Sinn Féin policy, she did not take her seat at Westminster, instead becoming a leading figure in Ireland’s revolutionary government.
