May is AAPI Heritage Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our country's history, culture, and society. It's also a time to acknowledge the discrimination and challenges that AAPI communities have faced and continue to face. Let's use this month as an opportunity to learn about and appreciate the diversity and richness of AAPI cultures, and to stand in solidarity with our AAPI friends and colleagues against hate and bigotry.

Since our founding in March 2020 during the early stages of the pandemic, our movement has accomplished so much and brought meaningful change to communities across the nation. Some of our proudest moments include:

Documenting reports of 11,500 hate incidents thanks to thousands of AAPI community members sharing their stories.
How to get involved: If you have an incident to report, click this link https://stopaapihate.org/reportincident/
to share it now.

Passing historic legislation like California’s No Place for Hate policy agenda, which will make businesses and transit safer and more accessible for everyone, including women and girls, people of color, and those who identify as LQBTQ+.
How to get involved: Sign our petition to bring No Place for Hate to your state.

Holding elected officials publicly accountable for scapegoating our communities and bringing awareness to the long history of anti-Asian scapegoating in the United States.
How to get involved: Watch our video to learn how anti-Asian political rhetoric can impact our communities.
Together, we have built a movement for racial justice – one that recognizes that keeping AAPI communities safe means keeping all communities safe.

Wong Kim Ark was a Chinese-American man who was born in San Francisco in 1873. In 1895, when he returned to the United States after visiting China, he was denied entry because officials claimed that he was not a citizen. The basis for their claim was the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which prohibited Chinese immigrants from becoming naturalized citizens.

Kim Ark challenged this decision, arguing that he was a U.S. citizen by birthright under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States." He pointed out that he was born in San Francisco and had never renounced his citizenship, and that his parents were legal residents of the United States.

The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, where the justices ruled in a 6-2 decision in favor of Kim Ark. The Court held that the 14th Amendment applied to all persons born in the United States, regardless of their parents' citizenship or immigration status. This landmark decision established the principle of birthright citizenship in the United States and has been cited in numerous subsequent cases.

Today, the legacy of Wong Kim Ark lives on as a symbol of the fight for equal rights and citizenship for all. His case is also a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by immigrants and their descendants in the United States, as well as the importance of upholding the principles of the Constitution and the rule of law.
